USSOCOM awards contract to Geissele Automatics:

Geissele Automatics has been awarded an indefinite-delivery / indefinite-quantity contract (H92403-23-D-0003) with a 10-year ordering period and a maximum ceiling of $29,263,029 to procure a new sniper support weapon, designated marksman, rifle taking advantage of advances in ammunition and weapons technology to improve the intermediate range sniper rifle lethality, reliability and performance when suppressed during 50-1,500 meter engagements.
This effort will also provide for complete sustainment over the life cycle of the weapon system, including associated spare parts and vendor support, new equipment training, engineering, and travel. Fiscal 2023 procurement funds in the amount of $4,240,133 are being obligated at time of award on the first delivery order. This contract is a follow-on production contract stemming from a competitive prototype agreement and is being awarded in accordance with 10 U.S. Code 4022(f).
U.S. Special Operations Command, MacDill Air Force Base, Florida, is the contracting activity.

  @Justin Doc I suspect that it has to do with the way military procurement system now works. The development and initial testing costs are borne by the vendor, not the US Government. The initial per-unit cost is how they recoup the investment. The "sustainment over the life cycle" is a big deal too.
  Just the ammo expense for the required endurance testing comes to big money. In recent contracts, the vendor is required to supply the ammo for these tests. That is partly why so few companies bother to submit weapons for evaluation in the first place.
  Even for the civilian market, the ammo cost for development can be an issue. In this interview, a Daniel Defense mentions that they shot about a million rounds in testing of their H9.

  @Justin Doc When dealing with gov't procurement, the gov't acts like time costs nothing, so there are endless forms to fill in and thousands of hours of boring meetings on everything from sustainability to diversity and inclusion.
  For businesses, time costs money, since people won't work without being paid. So, the overhead of dealing with all the bullshit gets loaded onto the cost of the product.
  Try it one day if you think it's so lucrative. Start a business and buy a product for $1000 and sell it to the gov't for $2500. You'll be broke within 6 months.
