SILENCER SATURDAY #83: Odessa Vs Wolfman – Modular Suppressors

    Modular suppressors

Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to TFB’s Silencer Saturday, where hearing safe is not just an OSHA level, it’s a way of life. Last week we started a first round of voting for four categories of the best suppressors: rimfire, pistol, rifle and specialty. In next weekend’s edition, we’ll layout the initial results and start the final voting process. Thank for your nearly 3000 votes and suggestions. Today we are going to compare two modular suppressors from Dead Air – the Odessa 9 and the Wolfman.

Before we get to our quiet time, here’s a few silencer stories from the last week on the blog:

SILENCER SATURDAY #83: Odessa Vs Wolfman – Modular Suppressors

We talk a lot about individual needs and requirements in this series and I thought we should use two quality silencers as examples of why self evaluation is important. At first glance, two pistol caliber modular suppressors from the same company would be interchangeable. However, you should make a point to study your intended platforms before making a purchase.

Let’s take a look at the specifications for the Odessa and Wolfman modular suppressors:

There are two main characteristics of the Odessa-9 that set it apart from other pistol caliber silencers on the market. The first is the ability to shorten or lengthen your setup between one baffle (~3”) and twelve baffles (~9”). The second feature is it’s amazing 1.1” diameter that allows for a low profile and perfect sight picture on both rifles and pistols. Also amazing is that the Odessa’s performance doesn’t suffer with its slight stature.

The Wolfman, on the other hand, is built for maximizing the internal volume needed for heavier rates of fire, larger cartridges like 300BLK and 9×39 and features a wipe that evens the sound suppression levels for the short configuration into the full size territory.

    Modular suppressors

While the Wolfman and the Odessa can be interchanged between most platforms and they are both modular suppressors, they are built for different roles. The Wolfman is at home on a pistol caliber carbines while the Odessa is born for pistols of all sizes.

Note: Direct mount on the new GLOCK 43X turns it in to a single shot suppressed setup. Piston required.

In its short configuration, the Wolfman is manageable as a pistol suppressor, albeit on the heavy side. In the long configuration with the right ammo, it’s really quiet. But the Wolfman is also built to handle rifle calibers, justifying the added size and weight.

In its shortest form, the Odessa-9 doesn’t exactly shoot at whisper levels, but it is a sweet subcompact setup on a pistol (see James’s Bond-like film below). In its longest form, it is amazingly quiet on pistol hosts. But with six baffles, the Odessa shows its depth by being both quiet and nimble on a rifle setup like the Marlin 1894CST. It’s like a slight barrel extension rather than packing a silencer. And the sight picture is a bit better too.

The Wolfman barely obscures the top edge of the 1894 CST front sight post.

Modular suppressors built for pistol calibers come in all shapes and sizes. Make sure your host requirements align with the specifications for your new silencer.

In this episode of TFBTV’s coverage of #TriggrCon2019 , James visits the B&T booth to talk about the new barrel and handguard kits available for the GHM9. The kits will allow end users to swap out their barrel and handguard for multiple configurations including extended barrel and handguard, or ported barrel with integral suppressor.
