The Magpul Hunter Lite stock offers trimmer, lighter furniture for your low-cost Axis. [Mapgul]

Lightweight hunting rifles are becoming more popular, but with less weight comes more expense. What if you don’t have a pile of cash, but you want a mountain-style hunting rifle? If all you have is a budget-friendly Savage Axis, Magpul says “No problem.” They can sell you a Hunter Lite stock for it, so you don’t have to go buy an all-new rifle.

Magpul @ TFB:

Savage itself has lightweight hunting models for sale, but they’re based off the more expensive 110-series or Impulse-series bolt actions. The Axis is their more cost-effective model, and they currently have no lightweight version of that rifle. But if you own a short-action Axis, you can install the action, trigger and barrel into a Hunter Lite stock to make your rifle lighter and less bulky.

A much more modern look than the standard Axis. [Mapgul]
Here’s what Mapgul says about the new stock:

The Hunter Lite Stock – Savage AXIS Short Action is a purpose-built hunting stock that is designed for Savage AXIS rifles chambered in short action calibers. The Hunter Lite streamlines our original Hunter Stocks to reduce the weight and dimensions, providing a fully-featured upgrade for those who want a hunting rifle that won’t weigh them down during their outdoor pursuits. The result is a stock that weighs 20% less and has a forend that’s almost 25% narrower than the original Hunter line.

Featuring advanced features and enhanced ergonomics, the Hunter Lite Stock– Savage AXIS Short Action is compatible with both right and left-hand rifles by simply swapping out an inlet insert on the stock. The aluminum V-bedding block features reinforced steel pillars to prevent compression and deformation while shooting. The buttstock and forend have integral sling swivel studs for use with a variety of slings and bipods. The buttstock has removable half-inch spacers for LOP adjustment and snap-on cheek risers with adjustable comb height.

The Magpul Hunter Lite stock has an enlarged trigger guard, so it’s easy to use with gloves. The integrated AICS-compatible mag well has over-insertion tabs made of stamped steel so you can ram the magazine home easily. The mag release is ambidextrous. On the forend, Mapgul built M-LOK slots for easy attachment of slings and other accessories. Magpul also says the stock is “compatible with barrel profiles up to Medium Palma.” The total weight of the stock is 2.8 pounds.

@PoormettoStateArmory Tikkas are a fine choice. If you have more to spend, Springfield's Waypoint and Daniel Defense's Delta should be at the top of your list. Howa rifles are good for custom projects and I always see them online and never in stores. Ruger's Precision Rifle should also be looked at too. And never overlook a Savage 110.
