In case you’re wondering why you’d want to convert a perfectly good repeater into a one-and-done shooter, Mossberg’s PR explains it: “The sled is designed to limit the capacity of short-action Patriot rifles to a single shot when used in place of the standard box magazine. Compliant cartridges, pursuant to Illinois Public Act 102-0932, include the following straight-walled cartridges offered in the Patriot series: 350 Legend, 450 Bushmaster, and the recently introduced 400 Legend.”
That Illinois law just took effect on January 1, 2024, and it limits deer hunters to a single shot, if they’re using a centerfire rifle. See the whole Act here, but the important part reads: “legal handguns and rifles are limited to include any centerfire handguns that are either a single shot or revolver and centerfire rifles that are single shot of .30 caliber or larger with a minimum barrel length of 4 inches. The only legal ammunition for a centerfire handgun or rifle is a bottleneck centerfire cartridge of .30 caliber or larger with a case length not exceeding one and two-fifths inches, or a straight-walled centerfire cartridge of .30 caliber or larger, both of which must be available as a factory load with the published ballistic tables of the manufacturer showing a capability of at least 500 foot pounds of energy at the muzzle.”

So, paired with Mossberg’s recently-announced 400 Legend version of the Patriot bolt-action, Illinois hunters can still buy a modern deer-blaster with a fair amount of hitting power. Since it works on short-action rifles, the single shot sled will also work with Patriots chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor, 22-250 Rem, 243 Win, 7mm-08 Rem, 308 Win, 350 Legend, and 450 Bushmaster.
