The Department of Energy (DOE) has procured the Primary Arms PLx 1-8×24 scope for its security forces. PA makes a few reticle options, and DOE opted for the ACSS Griffin Mil M8 version. It is an illuminated mil-grid FFP design.

    Primary Arms @ TFB:

The Department of Energy may not sound like an agency that is in the business of testing and adopting rifle optics, however, a big part of the “energy” they handle comes from nuclear sources. DOE also has substantial overlap with the Department of Defense around nuclear weapons. Keeping nuclear devices and materials from falling into the wrong hands is a very good idea, and DOE invests heavily in security. This goes so far as utilizing special armored semi trucks with classified security measures and large teams of armed guards. Also, real gun nerds know the “Colt DOE” 9mm submachine gun is one of the coolest clone builds.

While much of DOE’s security practices are secret, their adoption of the PA PLx 1-8×24 is not. Even if you are not in the business of defending radioactive materials against unknown threats, PA will happily sell you the same optic. It is in stock on their website with a retail price of $1,499.
