TFB Review: Pelican 1755 Air Long Case

The Pelican 1755 Air Long Case is the newest addition to Pelican’s Air series lineup. The Air series is designed to be 40% lighter than other polymer cases, while still retaining the durability and dependability that Pelican is known for. With big plans and a very long rifle, I asked Pelican if I could review their new 1755 Air Long Case, and here’s what I found.

Below is the product description provided by Pelican for the 1755 Air Long Case.

TFB Review: Pelican 1755 Air Long Case

Protect your long equipment inside the world’s toughest and lightest case. The Pelican™ Air Case 1755 is the longest Air case at 55” in length. With built in wheels and less weight than other polymer cases, the Pelican™ Air Case 1755 keeps you rolling along. It is ideal to protect survey equipment, firearms, camera tripods and other lengthy equipment.

With 12 bosses in the lid, the Pelican™ Air Case 1755 can fit up to three exclusive Pelican™ Ez-Click™ MOLLE Panels for lid organization. Pre-configure your gear by pairing a MOLLE panel with a variety of MOLLE pouches and Velcro™ straps (sold separately). Easily attach your configured MOLLE panels to the inside of your case lid and you are ready for your job or adventure.

TFB Review: Pelican 1755 Air Long Case - New Latch Design and Reinforced Locking Points

There are some notable improvements to the Air series that I noticed right off the bat, and that I really like. While Storm series cases use a thicker heavier plastic, the new Air case comes with steel-reinforced locking points. In addition, the locking latches now have an easy-to-use center push button that releases far easier when the case is jam-packed with equipment.

That’s not even the best part. The lid on 1755 is now hinged and locks upright. So no more opening your hard case and having the lid accidentally flop forward or backward unexpectedly.

The hinged case also allows for the addition of Pelican’s new EZ-Click MOLLE Panels. Air 1755 is the longest air case in the series, so they sent three panels over to fill out the entire top half of the case.

TFB Review: Pelican 1755 Air Long Case - MOLLE Panel Hardware

To install simply remove the foam from the case lid and remove the included hardware for each panel. The mounting points are built into the case lid, so a couple minutes with a screwdriver and you are ready to click the panels into place.

Each panel has a little rotating latch that you just need to push down on in order to click the panel into place. It’s brilliantly simple and incredibly robust.

TFB Review: Pelican 1755 Air Long Case - Molle Attachment

EZ-Click MOLLE Panels seem a little tacky at first glance, but practically they’re incredibly useful. This system allows you to free up more space in the foam by storing small items like rangefinders, medkits, and other accessories in lid space that would otherwise be wasted.

TFB Review: Pelican 1755 Air Long Case

You can order the 1755 Air case with or without foam. Pelican was kind enough to include Pick N Pluck foam with this review case. If you want an easier way to determine exactly what foam sections you need to pull, I recommend using some painter’s tape to outline your gun prior to pulling foam sections.

Hard Use and Practicality

TFB Review: Pelican 1755 Air Long Case - At The Range

At just under 58″ long, the 1755 Air is not a small case, but with (foam included) it weighs in at just 25 lbs. Not much more than my Storm 3200 that’s much smaller. The locking upright lid is incredibly useful, but don’t mount too much weight up top and then remove your rifle from the foam. Gravity will take over, so balance your setup accordingly.

TFB Review: Pelican 1755 Air Long Case - MOLLE Panel Non-Standard Attachment Methods

For those that don’t own a MOLLE pouch for every accessory (myself included), there are still plenty of ways you can mount items to these panels should you decide to spring for the upgrade. If you don’t need the extra mounting space, I’d recommend leaving the foam in the lid.

TFB Review: Pelican 1755 Air Long Case

Over the past three months, I’ve taken this case to bench rest ranges, hauled it through rain storms in the desert, and angrily dragged it up and down a few flights of stairs like a disgruntled teenager in an airport. I expected to find a fatal flaw in the lightweight design, but I was wrong. It took all that negligent abuse with only a couple surface scratches to show for it. I even left in a dust storm where after it was subsequently rained on (three times) during the six-hour drive home. Even after all that, the contents of the case were still dry and dust free.

Pros and Cons

The Air series is a fantastic addition to the Pelican lineup. It is designed similarly to a Storm series case but with enhancements in areas that matter greatly for practical use. Not to mention, who doesn’t like a lighter hard case?

TFB Review: Pelican 1755 Air Long Case

Saving weight in polymer does come with slight disadvantages. While the case was more rugged than I was expecting, the lighter polymer does scratch a little easier. Also, you’ll need to plan how you add panels (should you decide to). I found I needed to mount or place something above my foam-laid suppressor. It was just light enough and small enough that it would fall out of its foam pocket if there wasn’t something pushing down on it from above.

The Verdict

TFB Review: Pelican 1755 Air Long Case

With an MSRP of $489.95, the 1755 Air Long Case is priced slightly higher than the Storm series but adds a lot of features. Sure, this case might be about $100 more than your Storm case, but those weight savings might pay for themselves when you don’t have to pay an overweight baggage fee. For those that don’t travel often and want a lighter more customizable case without sacrificing durability, this case is for you as well. Each panel section will set you back $46.95 MSRP, but it’s not something everyone needs. So if you’re in the market for a durable, lightweight, easy-to-use, customizable hard case, well, this is the new benchmark.

I'd be interested to see a comparison between this case and the equivalent Nanuk case (the 995?)

In general, I like the Nanuk latches over the Pelicans, but I don't have a case this large to compare.
