POTD: Full-Auto on Pearl River
Welcome to Pearl River, South Mississippi! We have some of the coolest images “on board” here at TFB. In today’s Photo Of The Day, we get to know the Naval Small Craft Instruction and Technical Training School (NAVSCIATTS) better, as they train international students from Colombia, participate insertion and extraction techniques on the Pearl River, near the John C. Stennis Space Center, in south Mississippi, November 30, 2022.
The eight-week course Patrol Craft Officer Riverine (PCOR) course is designed to provide international students with the specialized training necessary to effectively plan and safely execute patrol craft actions in a riverine environment.
NAVSCIATTS trains and educates foreign Special Operations Forces, SOF-like forces and SOF enables across the tactical, operational and strategic spectrums through in-residence and Mobile Training Team Courses of Instruction; and serves as USSOCOM’s premier Security Force Assistance training asset. More than 13,000 students from more than 125 Partner Nations have trained with this Naval Special Warfare command since 1963.
The Pearl River is a river located in Mississippi, United States. It is formed by the confluence of the East and West Pearl Rivers near the city of Jackson, and it flows south through the state, eventually emptying into the Gulf of Mexico. Apart from being a place where some people can empty their machine guns, the Pearl River is a significant source of water for many communities in southern Mississippi, and it is also used for recreation, such as fishing and boating.
This kind of training looks like a lot of fun, don’t you agree?

Almost 30 years ago now, as a HS student I did a STEM program with NOAA at Stennis Space Center. I was in the Coastal Hydraulics lab and it was right on banks of the Pearl. 25 yards or less from the parking lot to the water. At least once a week you'd hear these guys roaring down the river, shooting (blanks) with the happy switch on. The live fire area wasn't too far down river either and sometimes you'd heard heavier ordinance going off.
Underwent similar training just in Florida. Despite the area they are training in being my back yard I've never done anything in state other than physical qualifications.
