SIG Sauer Unveils the NEW MCX Spear-LT Series of Pistols and Rifles

Back in the middle of July, SIG Sauer had me, and Hop of TFBTV out to their New Hampshire facilities for the grand opening of the new flagship SIG Experience Center, as well as the launch of the new P365 X-Macro pistol. While we were at the same event, SIG Sauer also revealed to us that they would be soon releasing a new series of rifles in the MCX line, The MCX Spear-LT. This new line of rifles adds some new functionality and features to the MCX Virtus design as well as a somewhat surprising new chambering – 7.62x39mm.

The new MCX Spear-LT rifles make improvements over previous iterations by adding things such as a more rigid handguard design, a redesigned match trigger system that provides more inertia for the hammer spring, specifically to overcome problems associated with hard primers and several of the least expensive types of 7.62x39mm ammunition. Finally, a new lighter handguard has also been added to the 16″ rifle and SBR offerings for the Spear-LT line. The new stock also incorporates a new slightly different deployment method compared to previous folding stock designs.

While we were at the brief range session with the SIG Spear-LT, we were able to try out several configurations of the rifles in various barrel lengths and cartridge offerings and the obvious standout amongst them was the new 7.62×39 option. The 7.62×39 cartridge does put up a significant amount of increased recoil but it also suppresses quite well. The new ambidextrous bolt release/catch is also a really neat feature that offers right-handers another option for manipulating the firearm and it also gives left-handed shooters direct access to a bolt release/catch with their support hand. Full reviews will be coming to both TFB and TFBTV, but for now, if you’d like to see an interview from SIG’s Phil Strader going over his thoughts on the new SIG Spear-LT you should check out the video posted below. The new line of SIG MCX Spear-LT will be available at the time of writing and should be priced at around $2,499 (at least for the 7.62x39mm pistol version). Sig Clear has the want to sell these to military buyers, and no doubt they will get civilian, LEO and Military buyers. It’s not the same as the M5 but brings some of the best features of it. For an army not ready to step up to 6.8x51mm but shopping for a new modular rifle LT makes sense.
For LEO or Civilians for whom 6.8x51 make little sense as a duty/Home defense weapons but more for hunting. A 5.56x45mm, .300blk, and even 7.62x39mm makes more sense.
