When it comes to distributing firearm products, there seems to be a lot of gaps that are left unfilled with information or product information when it finally makes it to market. That is why the National Association of Sporting Goods Wholesalers has been working on their new SCOPE PLX (Product Link Exchange) platform which aims to standardize products across the industry between the manufacturers, and distributors.

We are excited to be at the forefront of this movement to standardize the shooting sports industry,” said Easton Kuboushek, Director of Data Programs at the NASGW. “As a nonprofit association, we’re always looking to pioneer new technologies that advance the success of our industry, and PLX has the potential to be a gamechanger for all of our members.

The new SCOPE PLX database will allow manufacturers to standardize naming conventions for all of their firearms, optics, ammunition, and other product while simultaneously allowing for better communication between various parts of the firearms industry. SCOPE PLX will also apparently expedite the two-step distribution process by providing NASGW members accurate, detailed, and consistent product information that is readily available to them through the database. In essence “It also puts manufacturers in control of their products, allowing them to be the single source of truth when it comes to product specifications.”

SCOPE PLX will be offered as a free benefit to all NASGW members as part of their membership and will be just the first offering in a whole suite of database tools which will eventually include SCOPE CLX (Customer Link Exchange). If you’re interested in this new database technology being developed by NASGW, then you can check out the site dedicated to the database here. As always, I’d like to hear your thoughts on this new technology. Do you see SCOPE PLX and SCOPE CLX as overall benefits to the firearms community or are there some unforeseen consequences that NASGW isn’t taking into account?

How much this will help depends on who has access to update details in the database. If anyone can make changes it will end up being used as a marketing tool to mislabel products the way activists use wikipedia to spread false information about political candidates (favorable and unfavorable). It seems to me favoring the manufacturer makes sense but there should be a means for distributers and retailers to request an information change if they think the manufacturer is misrepresenting their product.

This is gonna implode the moment they try to incorporate handguard lengths, which as we all know are scientifically non-determinable and probably require quantum physics to be described accurately
