Galco Gunleather has often been at the forefront of this year’s new firearm releases. This time they’ve taken the old and mated it with the modern by introducing a new holster that is compatible with 1911’s that are equipped with red dot optics. The new 1911 Holster is on sale now and is only $49 from Galco’s website.

The new Holster is another variation of the Switchback, which is a belt-mounted holster that can accommodate both 4-inch and 5-inch 1911 style pistols. Even if you don’t plan on mounting a red dot to your 1911 the holster will still work without issue. The Switchback is a versatile holster that incorporates a hybrid design using both leather and synthetic materials.

The 1911 holster features options for strong side, or cross draw positions depending on user preference. The body of the holster is made from layered synthetic materials, with its outermost layer being made from black ballistic nylon. The ballistic nylon encases subsequent layers of closed-cell foam which give the holster its structure and also protect the firearm while being carried. The final layer is 420 denier gunmetal-colored packcloth lining.

The hybrid portion comes in with the outermost shell or exoskeleton comprised of top grain steer hide. the outer shell is designed to be ambidextrous for both strong side or cross draw holster positions, as well as left and right, handed drawing shooters. the gun is retained in the holster via a reversible retention strap which holds the 1911 pistol by the grip safety and over the rear of the slide in front of the hammer.

I think this new style of 1911 holster would be great for those who open carry a lot in the field and move around as part of their daily activities. The ambidextrous nature of the holster also gives a broader appeal to not only left or right-handed shooters but also people who prefer less conventional methods of carrying such as cross draw.
