POTD: Accuracy International Arctic Warfare

    AI AW Spuhr collection

As the Swedish Army is out looking for a new Multi-Caliber Sniper Rifle System for 2020 we’re going to take a look back in history and the Accuracy International L96A1. Things seem to have been so much easier then. Our Photo Of The Day is one of eight first AI AW (Arctic Warfare) rifles that were ever made. The AW models were delivered to the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration in October 1988, and the model was improved to withstand arctic conditions.

The AI AW was later adopted by the Swedish Army as a sniper rifle. It was designated PSG90 (Sniper Rifle 90) and is still in use. The PSG 90B (official images here) is the refurbished version. It has a folding stock and an upgraded 3-12×50 optic from Schmidt & Bender.

Originally, the AI AW had a fixed stock and a fixed 10×42 scope from Schmidt & Bender. Note the serial number “AW0007” below.

I hope green comes back into fashion. I wouldn’t mind a military green riflescope.
