What Is 300 Blackout Good For?

Since its inception in 2009 and subsequent SAAMI approval in 2011, the 300 Blackout cartridge has had a somewhat polarizing effect on the firearms community. Some shooters see the round as a do-it-all tactical solution, while others say they don’t get the point. This is one of those arguments that people shouldn’t put too much time or effort into, as both sides of the debate are right and wrong. Many have the wrong impression about what 300BLK was developed to address, seeing it as a challenger to 5.56x45mm NATO. This assertion tends to goad the 5.56 NATO crowd into defending old faithful, pointing out that velocity, trajectory, and terminal performance favor the readily available, relatively inexpensive round proven effective globally since the Vietnam War. Like most discourse, the answer lies somewhere in the middle, recognizing that 300BLK was developed for a particular purpose, and is a very versatile round that can provide mission-specific benefits.

Compact VZ58 in .300 Blackout is on the Way to the USA | IWA 2025

Czech Small Arms is bringing a new compact VZ58 chambered in 300 Blackout to the US pending ATF approval. With a 19 cm 7.5-inch barrel this ultra-short version of the classic Czech rifle is optimized for suppressed use and close-quarters maneuverability. The VZ58’s lightweight milled receiver rock-solid reliability and unique gas system make it one of the most distinctive alternative platforms to AKs and ARs. Unlike traditional AK designs, the VZ58 features a last-round bolt hold open, is milled from a solid block of steel and weighs less than comparable AK rifles while maintaining legendary durability. The 300 Blackout chambering makes this compact rifle ideal for short-barrel performance and subsonic suppression while offering better ballistic performance in a short barrel than 7.62x39. Pending ATF approval, this model is expected to hit the US market soon.

In this episode of TFBTV’s GunCon 2023 coverage, James speaks with Creative Arms, an Iowan boutique AR-15 manufacturer, about their integrally suppressed .300 Blackout AR-15. This carbine is different than many other integrally suppressed AR-15 options out there in that the Creative Arms uses a removable baffle core that can be swapped, but perhaps more importantly, it can be removed while the purchaser waits for their suppressor paperwork to clear or if the gun is being brought to a place where a suppressor is not permitted.
