SILENCER SATURDAY #311: Suppressors Ripped From The Headlines

Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to TFB’s Silencer Saturday brought to you by Yankee Hill Machine, manufacturers of the new YHM R45 Multi-Host Suppressor. Last weekend we raised our glasses to the new year and had a brief year in review. I had planned a reduced back-pressure showdown for today, but an inbound major storm shut down all range activities. Instead we are returning to our recurring series on Suppressors Ripped From The Headlines to see mainstream media’s take on recent silencer news. We’ll return next week with more quiet shooting.

Thanks for reading. Be safe, have fun, and we’ll see you back here next weekend for another Silencer Saturday.

Gun silencers or solvent traps: Why homemade gun devices are back in ATF’s crosshairs

In a blurred cellphone video that would later go viral, federal officers knock on a Florida gun owner’s door, demanding he turn over an illegal device they claim he bought as a silencer for his AR-15 rifle.

Late last month, the ATF tried to remove any confusion about devices marketed as “solvent traps” to catch excess cleaning fluids. Most actually are silencers, which are regulated by the National Firearm Act of 1934 – and banned in some states.

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — A gun and silencer were stolen from the Salt Lake City International Airport’s baggage claim Sunday, and the owner says it never should have been there.

Austin Lesnar, a Marine veteran, said he checked his firearm at the Sioux Falls Regional Airport in South Dakota. He was told his luggage would be checked to his final destination of Cedar City, however, it ended up at a baggage claim in Salt Lake City.

Salt Lake City police say video surveillance captured a man watching the baggage claim before grabbing the case and quickly leaving the airport. Detectives say he left the area on a TRAX train.

Texas Gun Suppressor Law Gets Second Day In Court

The Texas Legislature Passed House Bill (HB) 957 aka the “Texas Suppressor Freedom Act” in 2021. The law allows Texans to ask the attorney general to get a court order for them to make and have homemade suppressors without registering them.

The ATF in turn warned Texans that the federal law still applies and that violators would still be subject to fines and possible jail time. In July of 2023, the first Texas appeal was shot down in federal court by Judge Mark Pittmann on a technicality, but now there is another appeal filed.

The case is in the hands of the 5th Circuit District Court and it’s possible Texas could win this appeal.

LEWISTON, Maine — A Maine gun store denied an attempt in August from Robert Card, the person responsible for 18 deaths in two shootings in Lewiston last week, to buy a silencer after he indicated on a form that he had experienced significant mental health problems.

A Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives form asked Card: “Have you ever been discharged from the Armed Forces under dishonorable conditions?”

The document, known as an ATF form 4473, was part of the purchasing process at Rick LaChapelle’s gun store Coastal Defense Firearms, multiple reports confirm. According to the ATF, gun stores are not required to report answers to the form.

Silencer vs Suppressor: What Do You Call a Can?

    Full article: https://www.fieldandstream.com/guns/silencer-vs-suppressor/

When it comes to silencer vs suppressor, it’s not a question of which is which because they’re the same thing. It’s a question of what do you call it. Some people say “silencer” and some say “suppressor,” and to some listeners, there’s definitely a difference.

It’s only in the last two decades, though, that folks have bothered to use either word much, because for the vast majority of the device’s history, it’s been unavailable to the general public. But that’s all changed. Since the turn of the last century, the single firearm accessory that’s seen the greatest boost in popularity is the silencer/suppressor—driven in no small part by the introduction of the 300 Blackout cartridge in 2010. But why is it called two different things, and which one is right? Here are the answers, plus everything else you need to know about silencer vs suppressor.
