If you’re new to the series, this is where we look at the most obscure firearms that are actually for sale and ask the question – is this Gat a sweet deal or only have Fudd appeal?  Each week the TFB staff weighs in with their thoughts, but readers get the final say in the poll at the bottom of each article.

In our last edition, our poll showed that you, the readers, decided the white and gold Glock 48 was just fudd crap.

Production of the FN FNAR started in 2008 and stopped somewhere between now and then.  I can’t find a specific production end date, but did find it on the “discontinued products” portion of FN’s website.  The FNAR was a semi-automatic designated marksman rifle (DMR).  Designed around the Browning BAR platform, the FNAR had some big shoes to fill. It fed from 5, 10, or 20-round detachable magazines using a short-stroke piston design.  Weighing in at 9lbs for the FNAR-L or 10lbs for the FNAR-H the gun is a little heavier than modern AR-10 designs, and ultimately wasn’t picked for military use, leading it to be later discontinued.

While it’s objectively an interesting rifle, the lack of muzzle threads, proprietary magazines, and fixed stock I’m sure are what ultimately led to its demise.  FN does tout that this was a sub-MOA rifle, and with plenty of experience behind FN barreled rifles, I’m inclined to believe them (their barrels are fantastic). A later Winchester-branded version of this rifle called the SX-AR was released, but having never seen one of these in person, I’m not sure how popular they ended up being.  Cool piece of history? Yes. Worth it for the money? Not quite sure.
