Welcome to another Photo Of The Day! Today’s selection features Spc. Carlos Flores with the 1-87th Infantry Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (LI) as he kneels behind a berm and fires his M4 rifle Rhodope 23 mountain warfare training exercise. What a magnificent muzzle flash, even if the firearm is using blanks.

The combined Training Exercise Rhodope 23 is hosted by the Bulgarian Land Forces, 101st Alpine Regiment in Smolyan, Bulgaria. This year, the exercise is comprised of U.S. Army Soldiers of the 1-87th Infantry Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (LI), as well as Soldiers from the Italian Army and the Army of the Czech Republic. Combined Exercise Rhodope 23 is a Mountain Warfare training exercise that trains tactics and procedures in mountain areas, survivability, mobility, and sustainability at the Company level.

Below: This is possibly an AR-M1 / AK-47M1, as used by Bulgaria. Or do you have other ideas? Let us know in the comments.

It was a milled recover AK. Definitely a improved Bulgarian AK. Got to love seeing original AKs in use still.

    What the hell?

It was explained to me repeatedly by every officer and senior NCO that soldiers would die if we did not train with helmets! Die.
