The Springfield Hellion has been rather popular. I am a little biased as I have one. Well, Springfield Armory is making some long barrel Hellion rifles now with 18″ and 20″ barrels. Here is what we know so far.

18″ Long Barrel Hellion Rifle
First up is the 18″ long barrel Hellion. Most of the rifle is the same as the 16″ version. The main difference is the barrel length, weight and OAL. MSRP will be a little more at $2,016.

There is a small change that has been the talk in Hellion owners groups and that is the new selector switch. They have changed the geometry and now it is more like an AR-15. Safe is at 90º and looks to be about 26º down from 90º.
Compare that to the original Hellion release safety selector.
20″ Long Barrel Hellion
The 20″ long barrel Hellion rifle is the more interesting of the two long-barreled Hellions. Just like the 18″ version, the 20″ will be a little more than the 16″ version at an MSRP of $2,031.

The 20″ long barrel Hellion has cooling fins and a bayonet mount.
For the cloner fans, the 20″ Hellion is closer to the military issued VHS-D2 in Croatia. We just need someone to make that pistol grip and import the mag well and magazines.

The regular 16″ Hellion weighs 8 lbs so a mere 3 oz more for an 18″ barrel and 6 oz more for a 20″ barreled Hellion is not bad at all. The 18″ barreled Hellion might be for export like Canada as well as states that still think a rifle under 30″ is the Devil’s work and should be illegal. Of course the long barrel Hellion rifles would need to be “fixed” further to be compliant for states such as California. The 20″ version intrigues me the most. I am curious if the longer barrel will help accuracy and reaching out further. As I mentioned in my review of the Primary Arms SLx 5X Prism sight, 800 yards with a 16″ barrel Hellion wasn’t great.
