TFB Review: VWS TLR-VIR II EFL (External Focusing Lens)

We looked at the Villain Weapon Systems diffuser for the DBAL-D2 almost a year ago. In that time he has been busy making other upgrades like focus lenses and diffusers for MFAL (Multi-Function Aiming Laser). Like a focus lens for the L3 ATPIAL-C and makes it useful. Well, now he is making an EFL (external focusing lens) to make the Streamtlight TLR-VIR II IR Illuminator more useful.

    More Weaponlights and Lasers @TFB

The Streamlight TLR-VIR II is a great little weapon light and laser. It is not too expensive, it is small enough to fit into holsters but the Infrared illuminator is mediocre. It is all flood and no throw. Well, that is about to change with the Villain Weapons Systems EFL for the TLR-VIR II. It was Goonin Gear LLC that had the idea and approached Villain Weapon Systems to help him make it.

The biggest challenge is what makes the TLR-VIR II so great, the IR illuminator and IR laser are in the bezel of the white light. Since the IR illuminator projects through a hole in the white LED reflector, it becomes challenging to isolate and focus the IR light without adversely affecting the white light beam pattern. Well, Villain Weapon Systems managed to do it. You can see the TLR-VIR II EFL has an embedded focusing lens positioned in front of the IR illuminator LED. But it is clear underneath it.

It might seem like the white LED is obstructed a bit by the EFL housing but surprisingly the beam pattern is still usable.

With the IR illuminator activated you can clearly see it though the EFL.

Here is the TLR-VIR II on a traditional handgun.

One of the questions being asked is: “Will it still fit a holster?

Yes, it can but it depends on the holster. I was able to get the EFL-equipped TLR-VIR II to fit my Blackhawk Omnivore for TLR weapon lights.

    How well does it work?

It is better with it than without and it depends on your application. This will not supplant a proper MFAL like a DBAL-A3, PEQ-15, MAWL, NGAL, or RAID-X. But the VWS TLR-VIR II EFL definitely helps make the IR illuminator more useful.

Another question was brought up: “How does it affect the white light?

There is no avoiding the fact that the EFL will have some effect on the white light beam pattern but it is not catastrophic. Here is a sample video showing the benefits of a tighter IR illuminator beam pattern and then a video clip showing the white light beam pattern.

At this moment, Goonin Gear LLC is waiting for his production units and the final pricing is TBD. Check out Goonin Gear LLC as it is their exclusive for more information. You can also check out and follow Villain Weapon Systems for more information.
