Up for auction, we have a, very rare, Robinson Armament Model XCR-L 5.56 NATO Chameleon finish. It was developed for a U.S. Special Operations Command SOF Combat Assault Rifle contract. This rifle, in this color, is extremely hard to find. This is a custom rifle, with a gas-operated Long-stroke Piston and a 3-lug bolt, and 1913 Picatinny rails for any attachments you want to help make the rifle your own. It features a left side charging handle and safety for easy operation for left and right-handed operators, and a brass external deflector at the rear of the ejector port. Let’s dive into some more detail about this piece.

In 2004 U.S. Special Operations Command (USSCOM) announced they were looking for the next generation of assault rifles.  These requirements were for a Special Operations Forces Combat Assult Rifle.  Later it was simply referred to as the SCAR program.  While FN’s design would eventually win out, a lot of innovation happened during this small period of time.  This mid to late 2000s era brought to life designs like the Adaptive Combat Rifle (ACR) initially designed by Magpul and of course the Robinsion XCR family of rifles.

The XCR features a monolithic upper that’s able to change calibers with 8 caliber options for the XCR-L, and 4 for XCR-M.  Its long-stroke piston operation is paired with a proprietary three-lug design bolt that locks into the barrel extension.  This allows for changing barrels without having to check headspace.  In addition, there are small features like a non-reciprocating charging handle that I’ve always liked about this family of rifles.  These days I don’t often see as many Robinsion rifles on shelves, and it’s a shame.  While I may not agree with the finish of this one, I do wish more multi-caliber rifles were on the market today.
