Wheelgun Wednesday: Ruger Super Wrangler!… We Told You 3 Years Ago

Wheelgun Wednesday Ruger Super Wrangler (1)

When it comes to the world of wheelguns we love to see innovation, revitalized designs, and unique offerings wherever we can. We have already been drawn in by the allure of these timeless classics so now we want to be captivated by something we may have not seen before. Conversely, some companies are known for certain things and it’s like you could almost predict what is coming next … know that their logical conclusion is. In regards to Ruger and their overwhelmingly popular Wrangler, that is exactly what we did at TFB. Almost 3 years ago we predicted that a Ruger Super Wrangler would one day appear. So, yeah, we told ya so.

    Wheelgun Wednesday @ TFB:

No, we did not have some secret “insider trading” knowledge of what might lie ahead in Ruger’s product portfolio. In fact, we went out of our way to state:

Disclaimer: A Ruger Super Wrangler revolver does NOT currently exist. No one from TFB contacted Ruger for comment. All of the opinions expressed herein are of the author alone and are not associated with Ruger in any way. (July 15th, 2020 – Adam Scepaniak, TFB Writer)

Like we previously outlined, Ruger has been known to make many “Supers” of their current revolvers; this is not something new. In fact, they have been making “Supers” for over 60 years. These are all of the “Supers” that have existed or currently exist in Ruger’s portfolio of firearms:

So, the real question now is: how did we do predicting it? Should you ask us what the next Powerball or lottery numbers are?… You might want to slow your roll on burning down our inbox for that info, but we weren’t too far off base. The newly unveiled Ruger Super Wrangler has all of its nitty-gritty specs listed below and is legal everywhere (including California oddly enough) except for Massachusetts.

    • Grips: Checkered Synthetic
    • Sights: Ramp Front & Adjustable Rear
    • Barrel Length: 5.5″ with 6-Groove Rifling & 1:14″ Right-Hand Twist
    • Overall Length: 11″
    • Weight: 37.7 oz.
    • Capacity: 6 Rounds
    • Finish: Bronze, Black, or Silver Cerakote®
    • Material: Alloy Steel
    • MSRP: $329

    • Windage- and elevation-adjustable rear sights help put you on target and keep you there
    • Chambered for affordable rimfire shooting, the extra cylinder allows shooters to quickly change from shooting .22 LR to .22 WMR
    • Transfer bar mechanism and loading gate interlock provide an unparalleled measure of security against accidental discharge
    • Cold hammer-forged barrel results in ultra-precise rifling that provides exceptional accuracy and longevity
    • Cerakote finish provides rugged reliability in all environments
    • Checkered synthetic grips on a Single-Six® pattern grip frame

The attractive price, combined with the affordability of rimfire ammunition, make this revolver ideal for learning to shoot, introducing friends or family to the sport, or just experiencing the fun of single-action shooting.

Some of the upgrades that we thought Ruger might implement into a Ruger Super Wrangler were improved sights (specifically fiber optic sights), improved grip panels (potentially wood or G10), and interchangeable cylinders of .22 LR/.22 WMR. So, overall we were 2 out of 3 (almost) which isn’t bad. Ruger did enhance the iron sights by making the rear adjustable and you get a ramp front, but they did not opt for something easier to see like fiber optic or even 3-dot white dot sights. The grips on the Ruger Super Wrangler are the exact same as the Wrangler so it was a swing-and-a-miss on that feature.

The upgrade we were spot on about is the interchangeable cylinders. It is a tremendous value proposition to get a single-action revolver with 2 cylinders at a likely street price of $300 or less from a manufacturer as reputable as Ruger. You are talking about an American, iconic company with a reliable track record and a lifetime warranty. Moreover, they have been doing “interchangeable cylinder revolvers” longer than any of the cheap companies they’re competing against. We’re not trying to throw those pot metal companies under the bus that are selling single-action revolvers for $150 or less. We’re simply stating that experience definitely helps in the craftsmanship of a revolver.

In closing, I am personally excited that Ruger made a small, incremental change to the Wrangler to give us the Super Wrangler. I own 3 Wranglers so far and love every one of them. You might say: “Why do you own 3 Wranglers, Adam?” It’s because that’s how many SKUs I’ve been able to find in gun stores, thus far. You gotta own catch ’em all! You better believe that if I stumble across a Super Wrangler it’s going home with me. As always, let us know all of your thoughts in the Comments below! We always appreciate your feedback.
