HOT GAT or FUDD CRAP? Is This Custom AK Magic or Tragic?

Welcome everyone to the 150th edition of ‘Hot Gat or Fudd Crap?’, one of our many series here on TFB. If you’re new to the series, this is where we look at the most obscure firearms that are actually for sale and ask the question – is this Gat a sweet deal or only has a Fudd appeal?  Each week the TFB staff weighs in with their thoughts, but readers get the final say in the poll at the bottom of each article.

In our last edition, our poll showed that you, the readers, decided the .40 S&W H&K P7 was a very hot gat.

At this time the original auction remains up with this nickel-clad gat still up for grabs.  We can only hope that this rare P7 M10 will find its way to a new home in the very near future.

In this week’s edition of HGFC, we look at a custom Century Arms M70 chambered in 7.62×39. As is tradition, this rail-clad gat is currently up for sale on GunBroker for $899.99 Starting Bid with No Reserve.

Let’s see what the Staff had to say about this week’s offering:

“This is uglier than my SU16 Bullpup” – Nick C.

“It’s the sins of early 2000s AKs come to haunt us again” – Benjamin F.

“Mikhail Kalashnikov is rolling over in his grave so much and so fast that he’s going to drill into the earth.” – Will P.

“Because who doesn’t want a 15lb rifle with a horrible stock to mount your Swamp Fox red dot and Olight on.” – Tim C.

Before being imported as complete rifles, M70s were imported as kits and then assembled by Century Arms.  During the Mid 2010s, there really wasn’t the same amount of aftermarket support for AKM pattern rifles here in the US.  This resulted in a lot of “home brew” solutions.  Like cutting this top rail to fit a bulged handguard, or replacing one of the trigger pins with a screw to accommodate this oversized mag release.

Not to say I condone any of these modifications, because quite frankly, the whole rifle just looks strange.  It looks like someone wanted an underfolder, then realized they’re far from the most comfortable AKs to shoot.  Rather than cut their losses, they decided to “fix it” themselves.

Overall, this has to be one of the strangest custom AK builds I’ve ever seen.  These rifles were never light, but this one looks to have gained an extra five pounds in accessories alone.  I had to laugh at the strange rail cover placement.  The cover on the side kinda makes sense.  I have no idea why there’s a rail cover-up top though.  It’s anyone’s guess.

So is this gun worth salvaging for just under $1,000?  Or is this beyond saving at this point?  As always, I leave it up to you, the readers, to decide.
