[IWA 2022] The Detonics Gladiator 50 Caliber Black Powder Derringer

The Detonics Gladiator is a modern double-barreled percussion pistol that is specifically designed for self-defense purposes. While most other derringers out there make use of self-contained centerfire cartridges, the Gladiator line of pistols makes use of black powder propellant, percussion caps, and of course the 50 caliber projectile of your choice. What makes these unique for the citizens of the Czech Republic is that these black powder derringers do not require a firearms license to obtain and are available for purchase to any person over 18-years of age who lives in the Czech Republic.

In addition to percussion caps, the Detonics Gladiator can also make use of W209 shotgun primers in tandem with the powder and projectiles. The loading procedure is similar to any other type of black powder rifle in that the powder and projectile are loaded via the muzzle, and the primer or percussion cap is placed into the back – this makes the gun ready to be carried for self-defense. Detonics has included several safety features that make it extremely safe and reliable to carry. First, the pistol’s trigger is double-action-only and features a longer than normal trigger pull, meaning there is no need for a manual safety. In addition, the construction of the firearm also completely covers the primers and features spring-loaded firing pins to keep the pistol from accidentally sending a 1/2-inch slug through your femoral artery.

The Detonics Gladiator 50 Caliber Double Barrel Black Powder Derringer is available now through Detonics distributors in Europe and costs about €600 depending on the model selected. At the time of writing, Detonics is currently in talks with the ATF hoping to be able to import these pistols into the United States where it is likely that they would be treated similar to other black powder guns.
