This Photo Of The Day is a little different. It’s to show what TFB is about to review, call it a teaser if you like. We’re looking at a Schmidt & Bender 3-27×56 PMII riflescope and the Pulsar Krypton FXG50 Thermal Clip-On. In terms of optics, and software applications, we seem to live in a Golden Era.

There’s also the Vectronix Terrapin X Laser Range Finder. My personal best so far is 2850 meters, which I hope to push once the sun shows itself again. I’m told it can laser out to 3-4000 meters on occasions, and with the app, it will give you target positions on Google Earth. It’s a pretty cool toy.

We’ll see a lot of Thermal Clip-ons in 2021 I think. Here’s the Pulsar Krypton with the 56 mm adapter. Note the ARCA rail from Magpul on the handguard.

Winter is coming…

As you can imagine, it is super-hard to capture what you see in the scope with a camera, but below is a try. To be honest it is dull, black & white and ”electronic”. But it doesnt mean that you can’t  aim and hit with extreme precision. Just don’t expect miracles and a rainbow of colors. Aim in the same place.

Below: The S&B is looking onto the screen of the Pulsar Krypton, captured with the iPhone 12. To my surprise, it’s no problem to use 12x magnification. The reticle is GR2ID. The two white spots are about MOA-sized thermal targets at 100 meters, a 5 shot group was within 4-5 cm. They are clearly visible! The left one was mine.

I just bought a Pulsar Trail 2 Thermal Sight, but I have to admit that the Pulsar Krypton probably has the best thermal sensor available from Pulsar. It is made by BAE Systems in the USA. (No, I haven’t tried the US version of the Trail 2.)

Here’s a video of a roe deer with the Krypton, using White Hot. Please note that we haven’t seen the sun for about a month, temperature about +5-7C and wet. Conditions that are bad for thermal devices. I’m using the Krypton as hand-held, not attached to a rifle in this video. About one minute into the video there’s another roe deer.
