Founded in 2013, XTech Tactical was formed by a group of firearms enthusiasts. If their reputation lives up to the hype, this could be a huge win for any and all fans of the Kalashnikov platform. They offered to send some of their newest AK Magazines, and other accessories over for review. With my work cut out for me, and I dusted off a few cases of 7.62×39 and got to work.
Magazines
XTech was kind enough to send over a few different versions of their magazines for me to review. Included as the MAG47 BHO, MAG47 MIL, OEM47, and the MAG47 10/30 Commufornia Edition.
The mags themselves all share the same look and geometry, but magazines like the OEM47 (seen top right in the above photo) offer customers a less expensive option without any steel reinforcements.
Each of the XTech “MAG” series magazines receives steel reinforcements. The MAG47 MIL is the flagship and takes this a step further by adding a solid machined steel rear lug for even more durability. Followers in all the mags are identical except for those equipped with the Weapontech Last Round Bolt Hold Open (LRBO) follower.
Ingenious among these is the Mag47 10/30 Commiefornia special. If you live in a ban state but plan on moving to a free state soon, this is the AK mag for you.
Once you’re ready, you can purchase the Free State Adapter Kit, and within minutes have a 30 round magazine ready to go.
XTech Magazine Pouch
Additionally, XTech included their new double mag pouch in coyote tan. The mags fit very snugly into the pouch, and getting them in for the first time proved to be a bit difficult. But after a few tries, they were snug and ready to go.
At the rear, there are four MOLLE attachment points that allow you to attach the pouch to your gear bag or belt for quick access.
XTech Sight Tool
Last but not least, was the Universal AK47/74 Front Sight Tool. This is an AK specific tool that works well on the right platforms.
Before making any traverse adjustments to the front sight, be sure the tool will fit flat on the surface and will not bend the front sight hood.
On the top of the tool’s t-handle is a small cutout for adjusting for elevation.
*Note This tool does not work fully round hooded sights like those found an SKS rifles.
Fit & Function
Ak magazines are tricky to review, as each gun is almost always handmade. As such the tolerances between each gun are almost always slightly different. I gathered the largest sample size I could find and started test fitting each mag.
Of all the AK pattern rifles I tested the XTech magazines in, there was only one Romainian rifle that didn’t have enough clearance to seat the magazine. I’m fairly certain we attempted to seat a steel 30rd mag but to no avail. So it’s rather a moot point.
Just below it was another Romanian rifle with a slightly different angled dong grip that the magazine would clear. I think it’s safe to say that if your AK will fit steel 30 round magazines, it’ll fit an XTech magazine.
The magazines seated snugly in all the rifles and were easy to remove and quickly reinstall into any of the guns.
Testing
For ammo, I used a mixture of steel-cased surplus ammo from Red Army Standard, Tula, and Brown Bear. No advantage was given to the mags in any way. They were routinely dropped when full to see if rounds would shift and loaded haphazardly to see if it would cause issues (it didn’t).
Now just over 600 rounds into testing and I have yet to see any snags, hang-ups, or jams on any AK these mags have been used in. Plainly put, they just work. The MAG47 MIL does seem to fit just a little bit better than the rest, so if I had to pick a favorite that would be it.
Conclusion
AK fans will buy what they love, and I know these aren’t those coveted Bakelite mags you’ve been looking for. So if you’re just looking for range magazines that work, are made here in the U.S.A., take a look at XTech Tactical. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by just how well these have held up and performed. And trust me, I’ve broken more than a few off-brand plastic AK mags.

Thank you to XTech for sending these over, and thank you to Park City Gun Club for the use of their Full Auto AK to do some testing.
