Welcome everyone to the 44th edition of ‘Hot Gat or Fudd Crap?’, one of our many series here on TFB. If you’re new to the series, this is where we look at the most obscure firearms that are actually for sale and ask the question – is this Gat a sweet deal or only have Fudd appeal?  Each week the TFB staff weighs in with their thoughts, but readers get the final say in the poll at the bottom of each article.

In our last edition, our poll showed that you the readers, deemed the pink Harley Quinn themed AR-15 to be some over the top Fudd Crap.

At this time the original auction has ended and the rifle has sold for $989.00.  We’re not sure who purchased this gat, but clearly beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

In this week’s edition of HGFC, we look at an MP5 variant chambered in 40 S&W. As is tradition, this 90’s FBI gat is currently up for sale on GunBroker with a starting bid of $3399, and with a Buy It Now option set at $3499.

Let’s see what the Staff had to say about this week’s offering:

“Would have made the Iranian Embassy operation a failure” – Pete

“I don’t think it’s possible for an MP5 to be fudd crap… even in 40 short and wimpy” – Luke C.

“Its an MP5, WHAT DID YOU DO?” – Mike R.

“Those grey mags are aspirational to the proper caliber” – Rusty S.

“Would definitely rock that even if it’s in a terrible caliber.” Nick C.

In 1992 Heckler & Koch released two larger caliber versions of the MP5. Chambered in 40 S&W and 10mm Auto, these guns had a few subtle changes compared to the smaller chambered 9mm guns.  Easiest to spot is the translucent 30 round box magazine.  In addition, a Last Round Bolt Hold Open (LRBHO) device was added to the receiver. This works just like an AR-15 bolt release, where the bolt is released by pressing a lever on the left side of the receiver.

Features like the 3-lug muzzle device and diopter drum sights remained, and a tritium-illuminated front sight was added for night use.

Both the MP5/10 and MP5/40 were discontinued in 2000, but Hecker & Koch continues to manufacture spare parts for them.  These variants may not have been their best work but did provide features like LRBHO that we’re never seen on regular caliber MP5s. Personally, I think these are hot gats, but at close to $3,500 and chambered in 40 S&W, it’s anyone’s guess.
