The PlayStation 2 was my first meaningful, real-world lesson in consumer economics. My mom took me to Target at about 4 a.m. on an unusually cold Florida winter morning because she read in the paper that demand was going to far outstrip supply for the new super-console. Sure enough, there was a line forming already, and Target employees started handing out numbers. I was lucky enough (or maybe mom was wise enough) that I got one of the first PS2s in the Panhandle. Are we seeing a similar run on the new H&K SP5?

Back to the PS2. Later I found out those first-runs were being sold on EBay by that afternoon… for a lot of money.  It was a tough choice – do I hold on to the PS2 that I’d wanted for so long, or did I want to double or triple months and months of lawn cutting and car washing cash?

And if I did want to flip my new machine, was that ethical? Or was I a lowlife “price-gouger”?

We get older and, contrary to what I believed as a child, the toys only get cooler. Just in time for everyone’s annual Die Hard Christmas family film night, H&K drops the closest thing to the MP5 that they have ever offered to civilians on December 2, only a few days ago: The H&K SP5. It’s cool. Playstation 2 cool. Check my full review video to see what I mean:

Of course, as a new product with supply trickling in, not many people will be on Santa Koch’s list. There are going to be a lot of children without an SP5 under the tree come Christmas day. But Christmas came early for some boys and girls; some of them are already on the range saying “Now I have a machine-gun, ho ho ho” (the SP5 is of course, not a machinegun, but you know what I mean). While other boys and girls would rather stuff their stockings with cash; making the best of the shortage on the fun version of EBay, GunBroker. Prices for the new SP5 are reaching eye-popping levels. Will they double the approximate retail price of $2300-$2500? Check these listings:

What do you think – Is this naughty or nice? Are these guys gouging, or or they just providing a good to the people willing to pay for it – after all, many of the SP5s listed have starting bids of $2,799, the MSRP, so arguably, buyers are doing this to themselves. Let us know what you think in the comments.

Either way, Merry Christmas and yippie ki yay mother Kochers.
