The Secret Service has reportedly selected the Glock 19 MOS Gen5 and the Glock 47 MOS Gen5, both in 9x19mm, to replace their current service pistol, the SIG Sauer P229, chambered in .357 SIG.
Unconfirmed: Secret Service Goes Glock In 9mm?
The P229, in .357 SIG, has been in use since 1999, and the reported move to Glock will also see the transition to 9x19mm. The move to Glock has been reported by a number of sites, and follows a number of other recent adoptions by prominent government agencies including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Department of Diplomatic Security Services (DDSS), and most recently the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
Last we heard about the Secret Service’s search for a new duty pistol was back in July 2018, when a solicitation for a new 9mm handgun was posted on fedbizops.gov, the Federal government’s website for procurement opportunities. The solicitation included potential fulfilment for ‘Other DHS Components’ and called for a 1,000 striker fired 9x19mm pistols with the resulting orders coming under the U.S. Customs & Border Protection contract announced back in April. According to the 2018 solicitation any contract awarded will be on a firm fixed price (FFP) Indefinite Delivery / Indefinite Quantity basis.
The Secret Service, which is tasked with protecting the US’ leaders and their families currently has around 3,200 special agents and a further 1,300 uniformed officers. Presumably, if the reports prove correct, that uniformed officers will receive the Glock 19 and some agents will be issued the smaller Glock 47.
The Department Of Homeland Security, Customs And Border Protection’s contract is worth some $85 million with the order believed to include Glock 19s, 26s and 47s. It has also been reported that that the Secret Service Glock 19s will be issued with Streamlight TLR-7 weapon lights. While there has been no comment from wither the Secret Service or Glock as yet, it is believed that the transition to the new Glocks will be completed by 2020-21. If and when the Secret Service’s switch to Glock is confirmed, we at TFB, will bring you the news.
