Reader’s Choice BEST Compact Striker Fired Pistol: SIG Sauer P365 9mm

    p365 9mm

For the month of May, we challenged our readers with the difficult to define category of the “BEST Compact Striker Fired Pistol” for the Reader’s Choice. We understand some of you disagreed with our definition of where the line should be drawn for a “Compact,” but the definition we used was any pistol that has a 4″ barrel or shorter, AND has a staggered or double-stacked magazine. For this month, we put out 8 of our own suggestions and you similarly provided us with 8 great suggestions through your Comments. The winner of the “BEST Compact Striker Fired Pistol” for the Reader’s Choice was the… SIG Sauer P365 9mm!!! Most of us will undoubtedly acknowledge the popularity of the SIG Sauer P365, but what many shooters do not realize is this pistol is a staggered/double stack magazine. That is why it is so impressive the SIG Sauer P365 9mm is so tiny when it can hide 12 rounds of 9mm in its frame. The rest of the results for May’s “BEST Compact Striker Fired Pistol” are…

    1. SIG Sauer P365 9mm – 24.67%
    2. Glock Gen5 19 9mm – 24.19%
    3. Smith & Wesson M&P 9 M2.0 Compact 9mm – 10.48%
    4. Heckler & Koch VP9SK 9mm – 9.48%
    5. Walther PPQ M2 SC 9mm – 4.26%
    6. Springfield Armory XD Mod.2 3″ 9mm – 3.49%
    • Remaining 10 Miscellaneous Voting Choices – 23.43%

Looking at the voting results that you, our readers, provided for us on this poll, there are essentially 2 races going on: the race for 1st and a race for runner-up. The Glock 19 has been a favorite compact carry pistol for decades, but in our poll, the SIG Sauer P365 barely edged it out! Then, if you look at the Smith & Wesson M&P 9 M2.0 Compact and the Heckler & Koch VP9SK another very tight race occurs. The M&P 9 M2.0 only beat the VP9SK by 1% making for another close race! From there, the results begin to get watered down as to what is everybody’s favorite compact striker fired pistol.

    reader comments

When we run the Reader’s Choice every month what can be more entertaining than the results you guys and gals create through your voting is your side commentary. This month was no exception because you bust our chops and you have some pretty good one-liners. We appreciate you engaging in our monthly Reader’s Choice polls and growing along with us as we learn and expand this all out. So let’s dive into some of the more cringe-worthy, feelings-triggering, and hilarious comments you all posted!

Someone was smoking crack when they built this fruit salad of a list.

    -Squirreltakular

It is just my humble opinion, but stay in school kids and do not do drugs. Especially not crack.

Why no compacts in a real caliber? Like a Glock 30?

    -Wolf

In before the ’45 is an obsolete garbage caliber’ guys….

    -SkorpionFan

We did not state that a specific caliber had to be chosen for this poll (**cough** 9mm is best **cough**), but some of you believed something else out there was better than 9mm.

P365 9mmBill Ruger handmade two copies of a Nambu pistol in his garage, and the bolt and silhouette of the Nambu formed the basis of his Standard Pistol, which lead to the founding of Sturm, Ruger & Co. The Baby Nambu (Nambu Type B) was a three-quarters sized scaled-down version of the “Poppa Nambu” (Nambu Type A Modified), and with its 4″ barrel, it is about the same size and looked like the Ruger Limited Edition Mark IV Standard pistol discussed in another TFB article.

    -SkorpionFan

We appreciate the short history lesson on a pretty atrocious gun (the Nambu; not the Ruger), but in order for it to get on this Reader’s Choice list, it had to be a double-stack magazine… sorry man.

Are we not even going to talk about the OG compact striker by the prophet John M. Browning……the Colt 1905 / FN 1908 / FN Baby Browning?

    -CattyCakes

Well, first off, you deserve a creativity award for that cat-astrophic username (see what I did there), and John Browning is absolutely an old-school gangsta; the best!

This list reads like someone was smoking the devils lettuce. Sheesh

    -Michael Powers

You have no idea just how groovy these polls would become if we partook of some devil’s lettuce before writing them up (EPIC).

Best compact striker fired: Grow some balls and get a 1911.

    -Grant

We are just going to make a fair assumption that you do not know the difference between a hammer-fired and striker-fired mechanisms…

Springfield makes a good compact with the XD Mod 2. And they know how stressful certain situations can be. Sometimes you forget where to grip your pistol, but not when so clearly labeled. Only sometimes it is pointed backwards. Maybe they could add an arrow and/or more labels so when the grip zone is engaged it is pointed the correct direction.

    -UofU David

You know, sometimes I get confused when handling pistols and they do not have a clearly defined zone in which to grip them, too.
