SILENCER SATURDAY #21: Five Bucket List Suppressors

    Bucket list

Good morning everyone. Thanks for joining us again for TFB’s Silencer Saturday (well, Suppressor Sunday this week). In today’s installment we will touch on five Bucket List suppressors that are must-haves for any serious NFA shooter. While I have picked out silencer/host combinations that have always intrigued me, your secret lusts may be completely different. So feel free to shout out your Grail Gun setups in the comments section below.

After the list, I have posted up some Memorial Day sales and discounts being offered by manufacturers, distributors and dealers this weekend. Again, if I missed one, drop me a line and I’ll update the story.

    Five Bucket List Suppressors:

There are three staple silencers that everyone should own. A solid rimfire suppressor, a .45 caliber pistol suppressor and a 7.62 rifle suppressor. With these three silencers and the right barrel threading and mounting setups, you should be able to suppress nearly every gun in your safe.

But what about some of the more unique options that are considered niche setups? I’ve ranked my bucket list in order from the easily obtainable to the expensive or currently unavailable.

    1) Integrally Suppressed Ruger MKIII or MKIV

An integrally suppressed Ruger MKIV has that James Bond feel while being a great performer in terms of sound attenuation. Prices have dropped a bit in the last few years, mostly due to better machining processes and model availability. Considerations: takedown/cleaning routines, baffle material types and material, and overall build quality. I’ve shot a handful of different suppressed MKIII and MKIV pistols over the years and they have all sounded great.

    2) INTEGRALLY SUPPRESSED .22LR RIFLE

Whether built on a 10/22 semiautomatic chassis or a bolt action rimfire fife like the CZ455, shooting an integrally suppressed .22LR rifle is some of the most fun you can have with your pants on. Priced affordably and available from many manufacturers, an integral .22 is on my bucket list.

    3) H&k MP5SD

Although pricey in comparison to mass produced pistol caliber carbines, there are many builders offering MP5SD variants that are nearly indistinguishable from the real deal iconic H&K terrorist hunting rifle.

    4) VSS VINTOREZ 9×39

What weighs nearly 300 grains, travels 400 yards accurately at subsonic velocities and recently immigrated to the U.S.? 9×39 orginally designed for the VSS Vintorez “Sniper Rifle”, that’s what. Wolf recently started importing the unique cartridge and although the VSS isn’t available to U.S. consumer (yet), companies like Piedmont Cartridge are starting to make 9×39 AR15 upper receivers.

The VSS (Russian: Винтовка Снайперская Специальная, Vintovka Snayperskaya Spetsialnaya or “Special Sniper Rifle”, GRAU designation 6P29), also called the Vintorez (“thread cutter”/”tap“), is a suppressed sniper rifle that uses a heavy subsonic 9×39mm SP5 cartridge and armor-piercing SP6 cartridge. It was developed in the late 1980s by TsNIITochMash and manufactured by the Tula Arsenal. It is issued primarily to Spetsnaz units for undercover or clandestine operations, a role made evident by its ability to be stripped down for transport in a specially fitted briefcase.

    5) Welrod:

Only the most die hard silencer loves will appreciate a single shot repeating pistol made from stamped metal. The Welrod is an integrally suppressed pistol that is also a piece of history. The closest available clone is the B&T VP9, which will hopefully be available to American shooters in the near future.

The Welrod is a British bolt action, magazine fed, suppressed pistol devised during World War II at the Inter-Services Research Bureau (later Station IX), based near Welwyn Garden City, United Kingdom, for use by irregular forces and resistance groups. Approximately 2,800 were made. The Welrod is an extremely quiet gun, being only 73db when fired, about as loud as a present-day passenger car.

    B&T VP9 (www.BT-AG.ch):

The VP9 is, as a repeating pistol in calibre 9 x 19 mm with an integrated suppressor, the most quiet pistol in this calibre on the market. The barrel, due to several holes in front of the chamber, slows normal (supersonic) ammunition down to subsonic speed, therefore the suppression is optimal.

SilencerCo Releases Chimera 300 and New Accessories

WEST VALLEY CITY, UT – May 25, 2018

SilencerCo officially released their newest and much anticipated suppressor, the Chimera 300, and a line of new accessories that include 3-Lug mounts, a single port muzzle brake, and the popular new Nano ASR Mount. These products were built from the ground up and driven by customer request. The new Nano ASR mount offers a quick-attach method for Omega K and Octane Series, as well as the Harvester 300. The Single Port Muzzle Brake and new 3-Lug accessories were designed with a more compact, user-friendly approach in mind.

“The Chimera 300 is built like a tank and can handle any centerfire caliber up to 300 Win Mag,” said Dewie Vieira, Director of Sales. “It complements the best parts of both the Omega and Saker series.”

With no barrel length restrictions, the Chimera 300 is the perfect suppressor addition to your short barreled rifle (SBR) build. Full-auto rated, it takes any caliber from .22 Hornet to .300 Win Mag with ease. In addition to the wide range of full-auto capabilities, the Chimera 300 reduces the typical SBR blowback. It comes shipped with the newly-renovated quick-attach ASR Mount and a ⅝ x 24 Muzzle Brake for easy installation. The Chimera 300 is compatible with Saker ASR mounts, muzzle devices (including the new Single Port Brake), and front caps — the versatility you’ve come to expect from SilencerCo.

The new accessories, launched this April, bring add more versatility to a wider variety suppressors. The brand new recessed 3-Lug Mount is compatible with the Omega 9K, Octane, and Hybrid for easy attachment to your .9mm or .300 Blackout. The 3-Lug Muzzle Devices are available in the following thread pitches: ½ x 28, ½ x 36 and ⅝ x 24 — all for 9mm. For the first time, SilencerCo has designed a 3-Lug Mount for .45 ACP, offered with Muzzle Devices in ⅝ x 24, .578 x 28, 9/16 x 24, and M16 x 1LH.

“Our 3-Lug extensions offer the ability for people to run our low profile mount on a variety of 9mm carbines and 9mm subguns,” Vieira said. “We’ve seen an increase in popularity in the 9mm carbine and subgun market, and we wanted to give those shooters the ability to run a 3-Lug similar to what is found on an MP5. Our goal is to listen to the market and provide customers with what they really want.”

The Nano ASR attaches your Omega 9K/45K, Octane 9/45/45K, and Harvester 300 to your existing ASR Muzzle Devices and the new Single Port Muzzle Device. The mounting capabilities are endless. These additional accessories provide you the opportunity to switch your suppressor between guns without the hassle of changing the mounting system.
