Vertebrae is a small European company based in Bergen, Norway. They are specialized in designing long-range shooting products. They design products both for their own brand and for other companies in the industry. We have earlier wrote about the bipod this company makes. In this article, we’ll take a look at a Vertebrae branded muzzle brake.

The screw sticking out of the top of this muzzle brake is there to allow attaching a mirage band on top of the barrel. Mirage bands are straps attached over the rifle barrels (not touching the barrel) which block the hot air rising from the hot barrel and prevent the mirage effect from interfering with your line of sight.

The part that looks to be a lock nut is actually a thread adapter. In order to secure the timed brake in place, you need to tighten the set screws located on either side of this muzzle brake. You can also sandwich a lead ball between the thread adapter and the set screws. The unthreaded front portion of the thread adapter is where the set screws are contacting it and applying pressure to it.

The Vertebrae brake has three rearward angled ports. Such port orientation makes it a reactive muzzle brake and should reduce the felt recoil quite well. However, the downside of such ports is that they make it really loud and direct some concussion waves back towards the shooter.

There are also 6 small holes on top of the brake which will let to compensate the muzzle rise.

These brakes come with thread adapters with one of the following thread pitches: 1/2×20, 1/2×28, 5/8×18, 5/8×24, 14×1, 14×1.5, 15×1 and 18×1. Last four thread pitches are metric.

The Vertebrae muzzle brake is available in 6.5mm, 7mm, .308, .338 and .375 calibers. Regardless of the caliber choice, it has the same external dimensions and weight: length – 2.83″ (72mm), height – 1.02″ (26mm), width – 1.42″ (36mm), weight – 6.87 oz (195 gram).
