Firefield’s 1×30 Red Dot with Laser

Firefield

Firefield recently announced a new non-magnifying red dot optic suitable for the AR-15 and other platforms. Unlike many other red dots, this one also includes a red supplemental aiming laser.

Called the Impulse 1×30 Red Dot Sight, this optic has six settings that adjust the brightness of the 3 MOA red aiming reticle. To further assist with aiming the company builds in a red aiming laser. Both the laser and red dot operate on a single CR123A battery which is said to give an operating time of between 700 and 4,300 hours. Although the number isn’t broken down by the company, I assume the shorter time is when both red dot and laser are operating.

According to Firefield, the Impulse 1×30 Red Dot Sight is both water and dust resistant with an IP55 rating.  The company also states the optic is shock proof. The body is made of 6061 aluminum. It is not nitrogen filled, nor does it claim to be fog proof.

Its optimal operating temperature is from 32˚ – 122˚ F. So, this may not be the best sight for someone in the northern climates. Folks in the south are more likely to be able to operate this year round. Digital controls are on the side of the body.

The suggested retail price of this unit is $143.99.

Making good use of what is usually dead riser space. Combining a RDS with a laser is very practical idea.

    • Bill

To what end? I’ve watched guys run a laser and a red dot at night, for about 7 seconds, until they realized that that couldn’t decide which to focus on, psychologically or physiologically.

      • iksnilol

Shouldn’t they be at the same place if you zero them for the same?

        • Bill

I’ve handled a couple set-ups, and neither were ever successfully and completely co-witnessed. Then I still want BUIS, so there’s a third system in the mix.

I’ll defer to the .mil guys for how they use IR lasers with NVG compatible dot sights. I’ve just never been sold on visible lasers, at least in a domestic LE setting.

          • David Harmon

You don’t use the red dot or optic when using IR lasers and NVG’s.

You basically fire the weapon without sighting down it. Just shoulder it, point the laser at what you want to kill and fire away.

Something like this would be a simple reactive sighting system. Not sure why you would want a laser with a non-magnified optic though, seems a bit redundant.

          • gunsandrockets

Why? For one, mitigation of close range parallax error. Error which the high sightline of the AR is more prone to. Of course that mitigation only works if the laser is closer to the bore-line.

          • David Harmon

Huh? We are talking about firing with NVG’s. You don’t sight with them, because it’s too dark, and the IR laser shows up in the NVG’s just fine and everything is zeroed to 300 meters (US Army). It’s literally point and shoot with the laser setup. Even with the machine guns.

  • kagami

what if you have a front BUIS…

I think he means that the laser will hit the BUIS.

  • Hoplopfheil

Huh. I actually don’t hate this.

  • kregano

Not a bad price, but since no one reputable ever reviews these things, I never know if they’re worthwhile or pure garbage.

    • Billy Jack

A $140 laser equipped sight… Has to be high quality! I mean it’s in the hundreds!

      • Tuulos

You can get a nice optic for that money. You just need to accept that unlike Aimpoint you can’t beat anyone to death with it and expect it to work afterwards or have batteries last ridiculously long times.

        • Billy Jack

Nice being relative. I’m not a gear snob. I wouldn’t want to try to beat anyone to death with my optic. Kinda negates the need for one. You know how many axe handles I can buy for $140? I don’t know that it’s trash. I really really hope it isn’t because you won’t find a bigger cheapskate than me. The more features a value product has usually results in the more features it comes up short on delivering successfully.

But yeah I know you can get stuff that can help you put holes in stuff for that price but they ain’t come off Han Solo’s pistol. Next thing you’ll be telling me there’s a plasma rifle in the 40 watt range made in China for Hi-Point with a MSRP of $149.

  • Bill

So which red dot is the one that counts?

  • iksnilol

Sooo… don’t operate anywhere with a functioning winter?

    • MisterTheory

Good point, but it said “Optimal” operating temperatures, not absolute operating temperatures. It would be nice to get some clarification on why they chose the “Optimal” word. Normally they just say operating range.

      • Chrome Dragon

What’s the optimal operating temperature of CR123 batteries?

  • David Harmon

I would try this out on a 10/22.

  • Redfield Counterstrike, anyone? 😀
