Armalite AR-30 coming in .270 Win., 30-06, 7mm Rem. Mag and .338 Win. Mag.

In 2010 Armalite will be selling the AR-30 chambered in .270 Win., 30-06, 7mm Rem. Mag and .338 Win. Mag., making the name AR-30 something of a misnomer.

The new models feature a 26″ barrel, with the exception of the .270 which has a 22″ barrel. They all have the big AR-30 two baffle muzzle brake. It is the first time I have seen a .270 Win. with a tactical-style muzzle break!

I am not sure what the intended application of these rifle are. I have not heard of .270 Win. being used as a bench rest or tactical cartridge. I don’t think hunters will take to carry around a hefty muzzle break in the field. Most hunters prefer repeaters and the AR-30 is a single shot.

No word on pricing.

S&W M&P pistols now with thumb safety

S&W have launched a series of polymer M&P pistols with a thumb safety. The non-thumb safety models are still available.

mp pistol tm S&W M&P pistols now with thumb safety photo

From the press release:

“Soon after the introduction of the full-size and compact M&P45 pistols, we began receiving requests from law enforcement professionals and recreational shooters asking for a frame mounted thumb safety on other M&P calibers,” said Leland Nichols, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Smith & Wesson. “The optional external safety provides an even broader range of choices to the M&P line, adding flexibility in order to meet the needs of our customers.”

The M&P9 (9mm full size) thumb safety model has an MSRP of $719 and the non-thumb safety is going for $679. That is a $40 premium. I suspect many will pay the premium.

UPDATE: To clarify, I think all the models (calibers) now can be bought with a thumb safety.

iPod Touch mounted on M110 Sniper Rifle

We have seen some cool iPhone applications come out for shooting sports. But nothing comes close to the sheer awesomeness of the Knights Armaments M110 iPod Touch mount and accompanying ballistics software.

The M110 is the 7.62x51mm semi-automatic sniper system which won the Army’s competition to replace the aging M24 bolt action sniper system. While it will not replace the M24 in the near future, the system is seeing action in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The rifle is based on the SR-25, which in turn is based on the Stoners’ AR-10 design.

Knights Armaments have developed a mounting system for the iPod Touch that attaches to a side mounted picatinny rail. The mount attaches to an Otterbox protective case.

KAC contracted Runaway technologies to build an external ballistics calculator for the iPod Touch / iPhone named Bullet Flight. It is your standard ballistics application. You can set firearm / ammunition profiles, then call up the saved profile and enter your environment information, for example, distance, wind direction, elevation and temperature.

The application is available from the iTunes store for $11.99. It is a lot more expensive than the $4.99 iSnipe application.

We may yet see an iPhone on the battlefield icon smile iPod Touch mounted on M110 Sniper Rifle photo

CAA Glock Carbine Kit

Command Arms Accessories at SHOT Show had a prototype kit to convert a Glock pistol into a carbine on display. The kit is called the PTP. I have not idea what it stands for. It is a clever design that prevents any chance of the slide hitting the operator on recoil.

A.R.M.S Ring of Fire

A.R.M.S who manufacture AR-15 sights and mounts, and of whom the US military is customer, have developed a flashlight mount for the AR-15 called the Ring of Fire.

It is not hard to see how it got its’ name. The ROF can hold 6 flashlights. It could be used to hold IR lights or high intensity flashlight (for blinding people), lasers or any combination.

UPDATE: A couple more photos by SMGLee. It looks smaller than it does in the above photo.

Glock 20 SF and Glock 29 SF: New 10mm Auto

Along with the 4th generation Glock pistol, Glock have launched two new 10mm Auto pistols: the Glock 20 SF and Glock 29 SF.

The SF designation is often mistakenly said to stand for “Slim Frame” or “Small Frame”. It actually stands for “Short Frame”. The SF frames provide a small diameter grip. This makes it easier for people with smaller hands (or in this case normal hands icon wink Glock 20 SF and Glock 29 SF: New 10mm Auto photo ) to reach the trigger and is more comfortable to hold.

The G20 SF and G29 SF apparently feel a lot more like the G17 in the hand than their standard frame contempories. From the press release:

Team GLOCK Shooting Squad Captain and Champion shooter Dave Sevigny adds, “I really like the SF design since it approaches the ‘feel’ of the G34, G35 and G17 I have been so fortunate with while competing. GLOCK has another winner here. These pistols will appeal to those who want a powerful cartridge for Law Enforcement, self defense and hunting. Best of all, they have the other GLOCK qualities of reliability, tough Tenifer finish and the controllable GLOCK ‘Safe Action’ fire control system that is successful around the world.” .
