Welcome back to the series “A Beginner Tries NRL Hunter.” Part 1 ended with our team (consisting of my brother Barrett and I) finding some success, but also being plagued by some gremlins. Let’s pick up after the last stage of Day 1.

My article Precision Rifle Series: Gas Gun vs Bolt Action – Which is better? created quite a stir, which of course was part of the intention. In the next competition, I had to eat my own words, as I did an all time low ever. The compensator on my JP Rifles unturned itself, and it took a while before I discovered why my hits were going everywhere.

Thank you for joining us here at Friday Night Lights. Last week we took a look at some weapon lights of yesteryear. Well, this time we go back to the dark and try to hit things far, far away. This is an evolution from the Dark Mile where my friends and I shot a mile target at night. This time we push it further and try to hit a steel target 2,200 yards away. PRS rifles are some of the heaviest in the long-range business, probably save for benchrest rifles. PRS shooters are always looking for ways to improve the weight and balance of their firearms for more optimal results and the folks over Luth-AR have just introduced their new Sidekick Balance Weight for the MBA-1 or MBA-2 buttstock. The Sidekick Balance Weight adds an additional 14.5-oz to the rear of the rifle which could help in offsetting heavier or longer barrels which should result in a more evenly balanced platform.

Last month, I flew out to Wyoming and visited Weatherby to see their new fall products. One of the newest products Weatherby had available, was their  Backcountry 2.0 Mark V rifle. This variant of Weatherby’s Mark V line is an example of what can be built when modern materials and machining processes are used to create a truly modern bolt action hunting rifle. I’ve been following the Precision Rifle Series (PRS) for quite some time now and I still have yet to take the plunge into becoming a competitor myself. At a recent media event, I had the pleasure of meeting Troy Livesay – a professional PRS shooter who attended the event to give us all a good rundown of a few new Bushnell optics ( XRS3 and DMR3) as well as give us a few of his personal tips for improving your performance at any PRS match.
