POTD: The M110A1 Squad Designated Marksman Rifle
Today we have some sweet photos of the M110 SDMR Sniper System, which is a semi-automatic precision rifle that is chambered for the 7.62×51mm NATO round. The optic is a SIG Sauer TANGO6 1–6x24 low-power variable optic, which blends in perfectly among the other strange shades of FDE. The bipod is a 6-9 Harris with a LaRue mount to fit the M-LOK handguard.
These are the U.S. Army National Guard Soldiers with the 2-113th Infantry Battalion, Charlie company, New Jersey Army National Guard, and you can see them train in a live fire target practice. The location was the Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, New Jersey.
Below: The most dangerous end of the M110 SDMR, with the OSS SRM6 suppressor.
This is TFB’s Photo Of The Day, please come back for more interesting images of soldiers and firearms.

I got nine of these rifles at my unit, here's the problem. They're not SDM rifles. Put simply, they are in effect the M-110 SASS, (Semi Auto Sinper System), with a 2 inch shorter barrel. It's name says it all: M-110 CSASS, (Compact Semi Auto Sinper System). Point is, it's terrible in the SDM roll. Think like the enemy. You see a squad on patrol, everybody looks about the same...But that one guy with the big FDE sniper rifle looking thing with the big scope on it. Who do you think gets shot first? I told leadership flat out the if I was put in that roll again, I would NOT take that rifle. Good rifle, wrong job. I added a Leupold Mk 4 M3 LRT to M4 in Afghanistan with the scope wrapped in spandoflage. Couldn't tell what I had unless you were right beside me. Always thought the Sig 716 would have been better because the old ones looked just like a M4. But what do I know, I just did these jobs real world and teach it now. Good rifle, wrong for the SDM job.
Unclear how the SDM role is defined post M7 fielding?
