James Reeves is at IWA 2024 talking to Turkish manufacturer Akdas about their SAM carbine. The SAM is a Turkish short stroke piston operated carbine that is similar to the SIG MCX in that they use similar operating systems, AR-type magazines, similar stock options that interface to a 1913 receiver attachment point, hardened steel replaceable wear points in the receiver, and easy-to-change rail system that interfaces with the upper receiver. While it lacks the SIG MCX’s adjustable gas system, caliber support, and easy-to-swap barrels (not to mention the SIG prestige and the military contracts attached to the MCX at the highest levels of SOCOM), this is still an interesting take on a next-gen combat carbine from a country known to be capable of producing quality budget firearms.

Savage Arms is typically associated with high-quality but economically priced hunting rifles but at IWA 2024, they are unveiling a high-end collaborative ultra-lightweight rifle with participation from Proof Research and MDT. The rifle will use an MDT chassis with carbon fiber elements and a folding stock, a Proof Research carbon fiber-wrapped barrel, and Savage’s excellent trigger. It’s hard to believe that Savage is getting on board with high-end players like MDT and Proof, but it’s a welcome surprise, to be sure.

Genesis has been making big waves in the commercial market with their semi-auto shotguns, but now it has been awarded a federal contract for this, the Genesis MBS or Modern Breaching Shotgun. A short-barrelled, short profile, big performance semi-auto that’s small but easy to use, the MBS is a powerful little package.

James Reeves is at Panzer Arms’ booth at IWA 2024 to look at the shortest mag-fed shotgun he’s seen in a while: The Panzer Arms Super Short SS12. Interestingly, this shotgun has a spring-loaded pump handle that returns the pump to the forward position after it is retracted.
