In late October men of the 1st Squadron, 3rd Cavalry Regiment, currently deployed to Iraq, trained with the Drone Defender, an anti-drone device. The Drone Defender is made by Battelle, pictured is an earlier version of the system, the Drone Defender V2 – a newer, more compact variant is now available.
The Drone Defender uses electromagnetic signals to disable communication between a drone and its operator as well as jamming GPS signals and radio frequencies.
In addition to the Drone Defender the trooper also has his M4, while the other trooper has his M4, equipped with a M320 under barrel grenade launcher. The 3rd Cavalry are in Iraq as a part of Operation Inherent Resolve fighting ISIS. Insurgent use of re-purposed commercial drones to carry ordnance has become a major emerging threat.
