Remington Arms Company announced another 1911 style handgun. This one is called the Model 1911 R1 Ultralight Commander.

According to the company, the gun has an aluminum frame which works out to a 20% weight reduction when compared to a steel framed version of the gun. The company states in its press release that the frame weighs 7.5 ounces. However, on its sales sheet it shows the aluminum frame is “7.5 ounces lighter than a standard steel frame.”

If I recall correctly, an aluminum commander frame typically weighs around 25-27 ounces. I would expect that the sales sheet, not the press release, would be the accurate statement. If I’m off base, please let me know in the comments section below.

Regardless of its weight, the frame has a hard coat anodized finish. The slide has a PVD finish – something that appears to be becoming more common.

As you might expect, the barrel is 4.25″ long. The company uses a fiber optic front sight and a drift adjustable rear. The trigger is adjustable, and the gun has a skeletonized hammer. An extended beavertail is also standard.

The gun will only be available chambered for the .45 ACP cartridge. There is no immediate indication if the company will later introduce any other calibers in this model. The suggested retail price on the gun is $849.
