The idea of the M16-A5 is pretty simple: keep the 20-inch barrel of the M-16 series, but add a collapsible stock in lieu of the traditional fixed stock. This makes for a shorter rifle that can be length-adjusted for the user but keeps the ballistic advantages of a longer barrel.
Our Canadian brethren went down a similar path with the C7A2. It is basically the Colt Canada/Diemaco C7 rifle with an M4-style stock. The U.S. military has also fielded M-16 variants with collapsible stocks, albeit in limited circumstances. This great article by Everyday Marksman goes through the whole history if you find these topics interesting.
While no official A5 was adopted, it has become a shorthand phrase for a 20-inch gun with collapsible stock. Up until now, these have almost all been home builds. But now SOLGW is selling a complete version. It features a 20-inch nitrided barrel, an Expo Arms RAS (for those M16A4 vibes), and an A5-length buffer assembly. It is in stock as of writing and it is priced at $1,324.30. Check it out at Primary Arms.
