Welcome everyone to the 208th edition of ‘Hot Gat or Fudd Crap?’, one of our many series here on TFB. If you’re new to the series, this is where we look at the most obscure firearms that are actually for sale and ask the question – is this Gat a sweet deal or only have Fudd appeal?  Each week the TFB staff weighs in with their thoughts, but readers get the final say in the poll at the bottom of each article.

In our last edition, our poll showed that you, the readers, decided the custom Mosin-Nagant was actually a hot gat.

Let’s see what the Staff had to say about this week’s offering:

“4 1/2 years at an arts college and $80,000 of student loan debt was worth it because you were able to pull of this masterpiece, Picasso.” – Adam S.

“That brass knuckle grip is an exquisite touch of icing on this smoothbrained douchenozzle cake.” – Will P.

“I feel like this is a legal precedent waiting to happen.” – Lucas D.

“I’m not sure which is worse, brass knuckles on this or that Noreen ULR Mini .50 BMG?” – Nick C.

While you might not think it, there are some standards for this series. Not a lot, but they do exist.  Usually when an auction only has two photos I’ll pass it over due to the lack of content for this series. However, when it’s something, well like this. I’m willing to make an exception. This shotgun was suggested by a reader, and to that end thank you for both the find, and for the perpetual headache and joy this series brings.

Now let’s dive right into, well, whatever this turned out to be. Designed in 1987 the Mossberg 500 family of shotguns is one of the most prolific pump-action shotguns next to the Remington 870. Since it’s initial launch, quite a few caliber and length variants have come along. While most are game and field guns, in 2018 the 590 Shockwave was launched and the short barrel non-NFA shotgun craze started.

Since then, the market, and thus this series, has been flooded with modified short barrel pump-action and semi-automatic shotgun variants with custom paint jobs  Recently I’ve noticed more brass knuckle grips on guns featured in this series. A sentence I never expected to type.  In all honesty, this could be a cool(ish) shotgun if someone wanted to remove the hideous grip and was inclined to hunt in the appropriate conditions. I seriously doubt the buyer of this shotgun will do this, but one can dream.

With a current MSRP of $514-528 is this custom Mossberg 500 Security 12 worth it for $749 or are you better off buying something a little less “custom”? As always I leave it up to you, the readers, to decide.
