HOT GAT or FUDD CRAP? 6.8 Throwback or Throw Away?

Welcome everyone to the 206th edition of ‘Hot Gat or Fudd Crap?’, one of our many series here on TFB. If you’re new to the series, this is where we look at the most obscure firearms that are actually for sale and ask the question – Is this Gat a sweet deal or only have Fudd appeal?  Each week the TFB staff weighs in with their thoughts, but readers get the final say in the poll at the bottom of each article.

In our last edition, our poll showed that you, the readers, decided the custom DDLES was a hot gat.

At this time the original auction is still up with no bids and two days remaining. We can only hope this certified hot gat will find its way to a new home in the very near future.

In this week’s edition of HGFC, we look at a custom AR-15 chambered in 6.8 SPC. As is tradition, this non-standard chambered gat is currently up for sale on GunBroker for $739 Starting Bid or $859 Buy It Now.

Let’s see what the Staff had to say about this week’s offering:

“For just 859 you could own an ar in the 2nd or maybe 3rd no maybe 4th no 5th well 6th most popular cartridge. Also that Troy handguard makes me cry every time I see it.” -Lucas D.

“I like to keep my 6.8SPC prominently mounted on my wall of bad firearm decisions as an anti-hype totem.  Now you can too!” A series of unfortunate events: rifle edition – Rusty S.

HOT GAT or FUDD CRAP? 6.8 Throwback or Throw Away?

Once every decade or so the United States military decides they need a new cartridge to replace the aging 5.56×45. During 2002-2004 the 6.8 Special Purpose Cartridge promised to do exactly that. Developed by Remington, the 6.8 SPC was designed to bridge the gap between 5.56×45 and 7.62×39. The only problem was the cartridge never saw full adoption. In 2007 both the U.S. Marine Corps and USSOCOM decided not to pursue the cartridge any further due to cost and logistical issues.

While promising on paper, the 6.8 SPC requires the use of specialty bolts and magazines. Unlike calibers like 300 Blackout where a simple barrel swap will do, 6.8 SPC just isn’t that simple. For that and many other reasons, you’ll often see boxes of 6.8 ammo sitting on shelves collecting dust at your local sporting goods store. This remains one of those rifles that’s almost frozen in time with the classic AAC 51-T muzzle brake and retro furniture. If we were putting rifles in a time capsule, this would be the perfect addition from the late 2000’s. And to that end, the zombie lower seems almost like the icing on the cake. It’s just a shame it doesn’t come with a case of Hornady Z-Max ammunition to match.

So what’s a retro rifle in a not-so-popular chambering worth? Granted this could be a great shooting firearm, but is it worth it for the price and chambering? As always I leave it up to you, the readers, to decide.
