    The 2007 movie “3:10 to Yuma” is a modern remake of the 1957 film of the same name, which was based on a short story by Elmore Leonard. Directed by James Mangold, the film is a gripping Western that follows the story of a struggling rancher named Dan Evans (played by Christian Bale) who agrees to escort the notorious outlaw Ben Wade (played by Russell Crowe) to the town of Contention, where he will board the 3:10 train to Yuma Prison.

    The film showcases a variety of firearms that were commonly used during the late 1800s, capturing the authenticity of the Old West. The film pays attention to historical accuracy in its portrayal of firearms, adding to the overall atmosphere and realism of the story.

    Throughout the movie, you’ll see characters using iconic weapons such as lever-action rifles and single-action revolvers. Dan Evans, the protagonist played by Christian Bale, wields a Winchester Model 1892 lever-action rifle, a popular choice among ranchers and lawmen of that era. This rifle not only serves as a tool for protection but also becomes a symbol of Evans’ determination to provide for his family.

    On the other hand, the antagonist Ben Wade, portrayed by Russell Crowe, carries a Colt Single Action Army revolver, also known as the “Peacemaker.” This revolver was one of the most famous and widely used handguns of the time, known for its reliability and stopping power. Wade’s firearm choice aligns with his outlaw persona, reflecting his deadly and charismatic nature.

    The firearms play a significant role in the action sequences and the tense standoffs that occur throughout the film. The attention to detail in the portrayal of these weapons adds an authentic touch to the gunfights and shootouts, contributing to the overall gritty and realistic depiction of the Old West.

    Spencer 1860 Carbine 

    The Spencer 1860 Carbine, also known as the Model 1860 Spencer Carbine, is a lever-action, repeating firearm that played a significant role during the American Civil War. It was designed by Christopher Spencer and is notable for being one of the early examples of a practical repeating rifle.

    Christian Bale portrays the character “Dan Evans” who carries a Spencer 1860 Carbine chambered in .56-56. Additionally, there are scenes where his on-screen son, played by Logan Lerman, is also seen carrying the same type of Spencer Carbine. This specific firearm, known for its historical significance and association with the American Civil War era, appears to play a notable role in the movie’s portrayal of the characters and the time period.

     

    Colt Model 1855 (with Cartridge Conversion) 

    The Mexican sharpshooter Campos, portrayed by Rio Alexander, is depicted carrying a Colt Model 1855 rifle that has been modified with a full-length telescopic sight and converted to fire metallic cartridges. This modification to the rifle suggests a specialized and accurate long-range shooting capability for the character, adding to the uniqueness of the firearm’s portrayal in the film.

    Winchester 1873

     

    The individuals inside the coach are armed with Winchester 1873 Saddle Ring Carbines. These rifles are recognizable for their unique saddle ring attachment on the receiver. Additionally, the character Doc Potter, played by Alan Tudyk, is shown carrying one of these Winchester rifles while awaiting a new wheel for the coach at Dan Evans’ residence, played by Christian Bale. Furthermore, Ben Wade, portrayed by Russell Crowe, is observed carrying one of these Winchester rifles after successfully fending off an attack by Apaches.

    The inclusion of the Winchester 1873 Saddle Ring Carbines in these sequences lends a sense of historical accuracy and authenticity. These rifles were indeed popular during the late 1800s and are closely associated with the era of the Old West.

    Dan Evans (played by Christian Bale) and his son William (played by Logan Lerman) are both depicted using Colt 1851 Navy revolvers that have been converted to fire metallic cartridges using Richards-Mason conversions. 

    Colt Single Action Army 

     

    Within the film, a number of characters, with Ben Wade played by Russell Crowe in a standout role, prominently wield Single Action Army revolvers. Notably, Wade’s firearm stands out due to its custom grips embellished with gold crosses, earning it the nickname “The Hand of God.”

    The revolver is accompanied by a fabled curse, asserting that all those who handle it, apart from Wade himself, meet a grim fate. To house the weapon, Wade employs a meticulously crafted holster designed by Will Ghormley, seamlessly blending the aesthetics of a bygone era with the functionality of contemporary quickdraw holsters. In preparation for the role and to ensure authenticity, Russell Crowe underwent training by Thell Reed, an acclaimed quick draw expert, and Colt-endorsed “Fastest Gun Alive,” whose expertise has extended to training actors in various cinematic endeavors. 

     

    Smith & Wesson Schofield Model 3

    Charlie Prince, played by Ben Foster, is depicted wielding a pair of Smith & Wesson Schofield Model 3 revolvers, housed in holsters designed by Will Ghormley that position the revolvers with the butts facing forward. To immerse himself into the role of the ruthless Charlie Prince, Foster underwent comprehensive training under Thell Reed. This training encompassed a range of quick draw and spinning techniques, ultimately transforming Foster into the chillingly efficient killer that Prince represents in the film. 

    Remington 1875

     

    Tucker, portrayed by Kevin Durand, is armed with a Remington 1875 as his sidearm. Notably, several of the compensated townspeople in Contention employ 1875 revolvers as well when attempting to eliminate Dan Evans, played by Christian Bale.

     

    Spencer 1882 

    One of the deputies who captures Ben Wade (Russell Crowe) is equipped with a Spencer 1882 shotgun.

     

     

    Colt Double Barreled Shotgun 

    Byron McElroy (Peter Fonda) carries a modified Colt 1878 double-barreled shotgun with a shortened barrel until his demise in the film. Subsequently, Dan Evans (Christian Bale) takes possession of the same sawed-down shotgun after McElroy’s passing.

     

    Colt 1874 Gatling Gun 

    A Colt 1874 Gatling Gun customized with a 35-round magazine. It’s operated by two gunners who fire it before meeting their demise. Following this, a different gunner takes over and fires the Gatling Gun just before the coach gets overturned. The actual Gatling Gun utilized in the film was provided by the principal armorer, Thell Reed, who not only supplied the gun but also imparted training to the actors on its operation within the context of the gun coach. For scenes where the weapon faced potential damage, a rubber prop gun was also employed to ensure its safety.
