Concealed Carry Corner: My Updated Personal Carry

Welcome back to another edition of Concealed Carry Corner. Last week, we talked about cleaning and maintenance on your carry gun over time. If you happened to miss that article, be sure to check the link here. This week, I thought it would be fun to revisit my most used carry loadouts and what I have changed or kept the same from the initial article I wrote a while back. Let’s take a closer look at my updated personal carry.

    Concealed Carry Corner @ TFB:

    Glock 48

My Glock 48 really has taken the place of my Glock 19 as an all-season gun. Don’t get me wrong, the Glock 19 is still a fantastic option as an all-year carry gun, but with the ability to use Shield Arms magazines with the thinner profile of the Glock 48, the result is an incredibly comfortable carry gun. With the Glock 48, I kept things simple with no weapon-mounted light, no aftermarket parts, or added accessories to the gun. The only things I changed out on my Glock 48 were the 15-round Shield Arms magazines from the standard 10-round factory magazine. I also put an accent cut on the slide just to cut down on some of the bulk but other than that, this gun is completely stock. Even with it being a MOS cut, I decided to keep this one with just iron sights and no slide-mounted red dot.

For self-defense ammo, I will typically carry 124gr +P Federal HST rounds. Having 15+1 capacity with the thinner profile really does make a big difference when carrying all day every day. Usually with this set up I will only carry one magazine that’s in the gun, but depending on if I’m traveling or going into a metro city area I will carry a spare 15-round magazine. For the holster, I will switch back and forth between the Safariland concealment holster and an ANR Design IWB Claw holster. There isn’t a huge difference between the two but I keep one at my office and one at my house. For an all-around gun, the Glock 48 is one of my personal favorites.

    SIG P365 Spectre Comp

The P365 Spectre Comp has a great mix of capacity and overall size. It’s one of my favorite carry guns since it is a lightweight but capable option with a built-in slide-mounted compensator and laser-stippled grip module. The overall profile is simple to conceal and the ergonomics of the pistol make it super easy to shoot under stress with the lack of manual safeties. The Spectre Comp is slightly flashy with the TiN barrel and trigger, but in terms of functionality, it is one of my favorite carry guns.

For the Spectre Comps carry ammo, I will typically carry 115gr +P or 124gr +P SIG V-Crown ammo as well as a spare 15 magazine. The beauty of the P365 line is the fact that with the XL you can use the 12, 15 or 17-round magazine.  I will typically carry a 15-round magazine as my backup with the flush-fitting 12-round magazine in the actual gun. Having the ability to switch out the grip module to the larger 17-round one or even the smaller 10-round grip module for easy concealability is a great option.

    Glock 43

If it’s one of the 95+ degree summer days, it’s important to have a lightweight compact carry gun that’s easy to have on your body when the weather is sweltering and you just want the bare minimum. The Glock 43 of mine started out as a two-tone green and black gun. I ended up having it cut for a Trijicom RMRc and installed a threaded barrel. In addition to the upgrades, I also had the grip slightly stippled for an effective grip purchase. The Glock 43 is rather small in bigger hands, but for its overall size, it’s extremely easy to carry for hours on end.

In terms of ammo, I typically carry Federal HST 124gr+P due to its accuracy and overall performance from a shorter barrel. A spare magazine is a good idea for the 43 since its standard capacity is only 6+1 but adding on a +2 extension adds slightly more capacity as well as a comfortable grip for larger hands. It’s not necessary to carry in your 43 as the main magazine but your spare magazine is perfect for adding in the +2 extension.

    Overall Thoughts

When it comes to carrying a concealed firearm, I’ve come to realize a gun with nothing else crazy really is the best way to go. I will often times carry a handheld SureFire flashlight as well as a pocket knife and that’s about it. Less truly is more when you carry a concealed firearm.

Do you guys agree? My choices now aren’t exactly crazy but I have a reason for all three and each gun has its place even though they all are roughly similar in overall size. Is there a different carry gun you guys prefer to use every day? Be sure to let me know your favorite carry model down in the comments below.
