A new kind of face appears on the battlefield, as soldiers use the ENVG III night vision device. It’s interesting to see it mounted outside a gas mask, but train as you fight I guess. This Photo Of The Day was taken at the Goldmine Training Area in South Korea last month. The caption reads:

Soldiers from 4th Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment “Tomahawks”, 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, conduct situational training exercises, March 14, 2023, at Goldmine training area during exercise Warrior Shield. Warrior Shield is a 2nd Infantry Division exercise that showcases and employs Fight Tonight fundamentals and capabilities.

Here’s what BAE Systems has to say about the ENVG III/ FWS-I night vision mobility and targeting system (Source):

Our Enhanced Night Vision Goggle III and Family of Weapon Sight-Individual (ENVG III/FWS-I) provides dismounted soldiers with a solution that allows them to navigate and rapidly acquire and engage targets in all light levels and conditions. With both units integrated, weapon sight imagery and aim point can instantly transmit into the goggle – for a tactical edge during close combat missions.

12-micron thermal technology produces sharp thermal images – day or night

Rapid Target Acquisition (RTA) technology aids the shooter by providing the ability to simultaneously display the weapon sight imagery and aim point in the goggle, allowing the user to aim the weapon at targets without shouldering it
