POTD: Mortars! Best Squad Competition at Grafenwoehr Training Area

    Best Squad Competition

A great photo is often produced by being at the right time and place and using the perfect exposure. Today the photographer really managed to freeze the moment as the grenade exits the tube of the mortar. In today’s Photo Of The Day, we see U.S. Army Spc. Alejandro Ramirez (left) and Spc. Michael Hatzioannou, assigned to the 1st Squadron 91st Cavalry Regiment, 173rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team(Airborne). They’re firing mortar rounds during the U.S. Army Europe and Africa Best Squad Competition at Grafenwoehr Training Area, Germany. This happened in August 2022.

Mortars are typically used as indirect fire weapons for close fire support. They can be used with a variety of ammunition. Teams from across U.S. Army Europe and Africa test their tactical proficiency, communication, and overall cohesion as they compete for the title of Best Squad. Winners of this competition will advance to represent U.S. Army Europe and Africa at the U.S. Army Best Squad Competition at Fort Bragg, North Carolina later this year.

Did you ever fire a mortar? How was it?
