HOT GAT or FUDD CRAP? Is This Magnum 1911 Beautiful or Barbaric?

Welcome everyone to the 146th edition of ‘Hot Gat or Fudd Crap?’, one of our many series here on TFB. If you’re new to the series, this is where we look at the most obscure firearms that are actually for sale and ask the question – is this Gat a sweet deal or only has a Fudd appeal?  Each week the TFB staff weighs in with their thoughts, but readers get the final say in the poll at the bottom of each article.

In our last edition, our poll showed that you, the readers, decided the 308 chambered 1911 was Fudd crap.

Let’s see what the Staff had to say about this week’s offering:

    “I hate that I don’t hate it” -Tim C.

“I’ve fired one of those exact models and they are insanely fun. Literally no recoil with a huge fireball.” – Matt E.

“It’s a .357mag chambered 1911 which at first signals Fudd territory.  However, you can roast marshmallows with it while you shoot, so it’s a wash!” – Rusty S.
“I toured the Coonan factory in 1999. Beautiful guns.  Nice people. I didn’t want one then and I still don’t want one now.” – Pete
“What is best in life? To crush your wallet? To see your dollars driven before you and hear the lamentation of you wife? Winning the battle doesn’t really matter if you don’t have a Coonan!” – Luke C.
“I’ve always wanted one. HOT GAT!” – Doug E.
“Finally a 1911 that has as much firepower as fudds have been claiming for years” – Lucas D.
“My mind is telling me no, but my body’s telling me yes.” – Will P.
“I’ve used one. Lots of fun but company is stuck in the past. No accessory rail and no optic mounting options” – Nick C.
“Coonan the Barbooian” – James Reeves

If you’re like me, you’ve probably never seen a Coonan before.  I did a little digging and it looks like they filed for bankruptcy in 1994 and were formally dissolved in 1998.  Oddly enough, it certainly looks like it would be more fun to shoot than say a Desert Eagle in the same chambering.  Probably a tad bit louder with the compensator though.

HOT GAT or FUDD CRAP? Is This Magnum 1911 Beautiful or Barbaric?

The 90s was an interesting time for the handgun industry, and this is a prime example of exactly that.  While polymer frame handguns were slowly being introduced, the old guard was still exploring 1911s in various shapes, sizes, and calibers.  To me, this gun is a mixture of intriguing and confusing.  I’d love to shoot one, but the price tag puts this more in the collector’s realm.

But what do you think?  Is something this unique worth the $4k price tag?  Or would you pass on this pistol which magazines are probably just as common as moon rocks?  As always, I leave it up to you, the readers, to decide.
