TFB Armorer’s Bench: Closer Look – Wheeler Precision Micro Screwdriver Set

    Micro Screwdriver Set

Welcome everyone to the TFB Armorer’s Bench! As mentioned in the little blurb, this series will focus on a lot of home armorer and gunsmith activities. In this article sponsored by WheelerTiptonCaldwell, and Frankford Arsenal, I decided to take a look at the Wheeler Precision Micro Screwdriver Set. I’ve been holding off doing one of our closer looks at this particular product because it was not one I had previously owned or worked with. After a decent amount of time and usage, I feel I am better equipped to talk it over now. That all being said, let’s dive right into this closer look at the Wheeler Precision Micro Screwdriver Set!

TFB Armorer’s Bench: Wheeler Armorer’s Pistol Sight Tool

Welcome to our recurring series of Armorer’s Bench which is made possible and brought to you by WheelerTiptonCaldwell, and Frankford Arsenal who are our sponsors. Here, we at TFB hope to inform, entertain, and even inspire any would-be gunsmith or armorer out there. Ideally, with the information I provide and with the help of our sponsors, you can have some useful knowledge pertaining to the conservation and improvement of firearms technology while at the same time sharing experiences and teaching each other new tips and tricks along the way in the comments. Digging deep into what it is to be an armorer or gunsmith has significance but what is important is what those people do to show they’ve earned that title. I am happy to share my experiences and knowledge and hope it is informative!

Make your personal safety a priority:

    1. Practice proper gun safety. Always make sure before the firearm hits your bench that it is unloaded and safe to be handled.
    2. Wear the proper safety equipment. The main one would be safety glasses (decent ones) since parts are often under spring tension and you may work with high RPM tools. Other honorable mentions would be latex gloves or a respirator when working with potentially harmful solvents and oils. Also hearing protection when working with loud machinery or test-firing firearms.
    3. Modifications, alterations, and customizations will void your firearm’s warranty 9.5 times out of 10. Please take that into consideration before attempting any at-home gunsmithing.
    4. If you are unsure about proper safety practices, disassembly procedures, or warranty standards, stop, put down the tools, and consult a competent gunsmith.

Brief Overview: Wheeler Precision Micro Screwdriver Set

The Wheeler Precision Micro Screwdriver Set is a budget-friendly and more ergonomic option in comparison to other micro screwdrivers out there. It is marketed towards gunsmiths and armorers so thankfully it is packed with very common necessary micro screwdriver bits. The screwdrivers themselves are well built but thin. In comparison to typical micro screwdrivers, they are much more wieldy but still slim and somewhat slippery for lack of a better word. Honestly, I do not find this to be a huge deal since you should not be applying a ton of torque to very small and finely threaded screws anyway.

    Micro Screwdriver Set

This micro screwdriver set is one of many screwdriver sets that Wheeler offers. The most popular option has to be their 89 Piece set which I highly recommend since it includes a whole host of specialty bits. That set however does not equip you to handle the smaller screws involved in gunsmithing. A micro-set is absolutely necessary if only for the fact of proper firearm maintenance and consideration for the aesthetic of the firearm meat surrounding the screw. Using a correctly sized screwdriver bit will save you a ton of potential trouble as well as keep your good-looking gun looking good. If you choose to reach for the easiest and closest option available, chances are in this case it would be oversized and you would not only damage the screw but also the material and finish surrounding it.

Closing Thoughts: Wheeler Precision Micro Screwdriver Set

In closing, I think this is an affordable and valuable addition to any armorer’s bench setup. Micro screwdriver sets are absolutely necessary. In the past, if I needed a small screwdriver I would make one out of some spare materials but that takes time and time is a valuable thing. Wheeler does offer another micro screwdriver set in the form of a Micro Screwdriver Pen but I have not had any hands-on experience with that product. Next week I plan on diving into firearm finishes so stay tuned and take care!
