TFB Weekly Amazon Deals 34: Airgun Deals for Cheap Backyard Training

Welcome to TFB Weekly Amazon Deals 27. This week I wanted to talk to you guys about being prepared at the range. For some of you guys who have your own land or private shooting range this may be a bit of a non-issue, but for many of us who either have to drive dozens of minutes or maybe several hours to the range and back, forgetting something at home or not having a critical tool or accessory in your range bag and end the day prematurely and really put a damper on everyone’s mood when it was supposed to be an enjoyable range day. In that same vein, I’ve included several items on this list that would make excellent items to stuff into your range bag in case the need ever arises. Many of these items are derived from our valued Patreon and Subscribe Star members while others are ones that I’ve personally kept in my range bag and have saved my range session on more than a handful of occasions.

A good range bag should have a few essential items that are always with you and among them are the following:

    • IFAK with gear that coincides with your level of medical training
    • Eye and Ear protection
    • General Cleaning Kit
    • Staple Gun
    • A Multi-Tool
    • Your Guns and Ammo!

If you’re wondering where we’re putting all this stuff, you might need a range bag upgrade. The Smith & Wesson M&P Tactical Range Bag is extremely spacious and is one of the most popular universal range bags on the market. It is currently on sale for nearly half of its normal retail price.

    1. Duct Tape

I think it goes without saying that duct tape is an extremely useful tool in almost any situation but for the range, it has a couple of very specific uses that make it almost indispensable. One of those is it’s a great way to attach targets to non-standard target stands. Not only is duct tape very useful for hanging targets, if you’re not a snob you can also use duct tape to cover up previous holes and extend the life of your target or even just use the duct tape itself as a point to aim at. It’s also good for silencing your buddies when they attempt to critique your perhaps less than perfect marksmanship.

Going right along with that are Sharpie markers. I don’t think I really need to explain how these work or why they make a great addition to any range bag but beyond marking targets they can be really useful for writing down field notes or labeling personal items if you’re at the range with a couple buddies who field similar gear.

    2. Extra PPE

Having a spare set of eye protection and ear protection is always a great thing. Not only can you share with someone who might not have brought theirs but you can also have the peace of mind knowing that in the unlikely event you’ve forgotten your PPE gear, you’ll have some ready for you in your range bag. In addition to being a spare set for peace of mind, I tend to keep an alternative weather pair of each just in case the day is overcast or too hot, too cold, etc. There really isn’t a “do it all” pair of eye pro or ear pro and I’ve always thought it prudent to keep at least one pair of over the ear hearing protection as well as some clear plain safety glasses in case my sunglasses start to give me visibility issues if its a cloudy day.

    3. Notepad or Field Notebook

I was never really one to take notes at the range but through a friend, I discovered the value of painstakingly recording range results for both your personal performance as well as keeping track of the performance of your firearm over time. If you’re an avid hunter, field notes can be invaluable for tracking potential prey, or the unique challenges you remember about shooting from a specific hunting location. A friend of mine uses a weatherproof field notes booklet to keep track of each of his range sessions and gives himself actionable and simple improvements to make from each range session. I think it’s just good practice in general to have something to jot down notes with.

    4. A Poncho or Compact Rain Jacket

The rain never hurt anyone but it can put a bit of a damper on your range day if you’re not indoors. Having a poncho or a light rain jacket for those unexpected showers can really enhance your comfort while you’re out training. Nothing is worse than having a wet pair of clothes for the hour-long ride home so having a durable, rainproof and potentially even windproof jacket will not only keep you dry but keep you focused on the important things – like the shooting.
