A couple of weeks ago Barrett Firearms Manufacturing Inc. announced that they had completed the first shipment of rifles to the US Army. The shipment of MRAD Mk22 MOD 0 rifles is the first of a series which will fulfil a $50 million five-year contract signed back in early 2021. The contract will see just short of 3,000 MRADs procured as part of the US Army Precision Sniper Rifle program.

- Barrett To Deliver First Advanced Sniper Rifles to US SOCOM in Early 2021

- Barrett to Launch New REC10 at SHOT Show
The original contract and Barrett’s new announcement don’t allude to which caliber the rifle will be predominantly chambered in while in US Army service, instead noting that the MK22 MRAD “multi-caliber bolt action sniper rifle is capable of converting between 7.62x51mm, .300 Norma Magnum and .338 Norma Magnum calibers, based on the mission.”
The US Army noted their interest in the MRAD several years ago and US SOCOM have already adopted the rifle as the ASR or Advanced Sniper Rifle. Additionally, back in 2019, the US Department of Defense procured an undisclosed number of MRAD precision rifles chambered in .300 PRC.
Here is Barrett’s announcement in full:
Barrett Firearms Manufacturing Inc. is pleased to announce that it has completed the first shipment for the United States Army Precision Sniper Rifle program. The contract, previously awarded in April 2021, consists of the MRAD® (Multi-Role Adaptive Design) MK22™ MOD 0 rifle paired with a Leupold & Stevens Mark 5 HD scope and sniper-accessory kit.
“We are pleased to have passed all preliminary program requirements and to now begin delivery of the MK22™ rifle system to the Army soldiers.” said Joel Miller, Barrett’s Vice President of Sales and Marketing.
Designed with precision and modularity in mind, the MK22™ provides even greater flexibility within the highly successful MRAD® rifle platform. This multi-caliber bolt action sniper rifle is capable of converting between 7.62x51mm, .300 Norma Magnum and .338 Norma Magnum calibers, based on the mission.
