Straight-wall cartridges are very popular for a few reasons. Some hunters use them purely because they like the performance of a specific caliber. Many jurisdictions also ban the use of necked cartridges for hunting, leaving straight-wall calibers as the only option. The reasons for using these cartridges don’t matter. What matters is that you have the right equipment to support the caliber you’re using. Optimized specifically for straight-wall cartridges, Vortex has just introduced the new Crossfire II 3-9×50 Straight-Wall BDC riflescope.

Vortex Optics @ TFB:

Whatever the reason you shoot straight-wall cartridges (like the .450 Bushmaster, 350 Legend, and .45-70 Government), the Crossfire® II 3-9×50 Straight-Wall is built to help you get the most out of these classic cartridges. With a Bullet Drop Compensator (BDC) reticle optimized for straight-wall hunting, you’ll enjoy accurate holdovers and rapid target acquisition. The one-inch tube provides an ideal combination of adjustment, size, and weight for a variety of hunting scenarios, and of course, you can count on the workhorse value of the Crossfire® II line to help you fill those tags, year after year

The Crossfire II 3-9×50 Straight-Wall BDC Riflescope

The Crossfire II 3-9×50 Straight-Wall BDC riflescope uses the Straight-Wall BDC MOA reticle. This reticle features built-in 150, 200, 250, and 300-yard holdovers for use with .450 Bushmaster, .45-70 Government, and .350 Legend cartridges. The scopes are waterproof, fog-proof, and shock-proof for use in harsh environments. They are constructed from a single piece of aluminum and use a 1″ tube. While maintaining features found on higher-end scopes, the Crossfire II 3-9×50 Straight-Wall BDC riflescope comes in at a very reasonable $219.99 MSRP.

Would these scopes be good for 30-30 or 300 Blackout? Is the trajectory close enough for them to work? I've been looking for BDC scopes for 30-30 or bolt-action 300 Blackout, and they're hard to find. I can't find any 30-30 scopes (everyone uses irons, but my 30-30 is a TC Encore with no iron sights). And the only 300 Blackout scopes seem to be prism scopes for AR-15s, and prism scopes won't work on bolties or TC Encore (too much eye relief). I prefer LPVO (low-power variable optic) scopes like 1-6 or 1-8 rather than 3-9.

A BDC more closely matching the ballistics of straight wall calibers is definitely helpful although I do wish they had done it in a LPVO instead of or, even better, in addition to. I prefer to keep my initial setting as low as possible and then add magnification if needed. I was running a Leupold VX-R Hog 1.25-4x20 LPVO on my .50 Beowulf but I recently switched to a Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6x24 for the finer reticle. I would have gone with the 1-8 but I had a spare 1-6 available that came off a different rifle.
