Federal Ammunition has introduced a new line of shotshell loads on the heels of this year’s Olympics. The new High Over All (HOA) shotshell loads are intended for competitive use and offer shooters better reloadability and more consistent shot patterns. Federal has optimized these loads for trap, skeet, and sporting clay shooters that need the best that Federal Ammunition can offer its customers.

The new loads were showcased at the Minnesota HOA State Champion Shoot which was held at the Minnesota Horse and Hunt Club in Prior Lake, Minnesota at the end of August. During this event, several of Federal’s engineers, shooters, ambassadors, and competitors were present to test out the new loads in a competitive environment.

“We are excited to build on the great momentum of this new product line. Competition shooters have been asking for a new competition load from Federal—and we’ve delivered with the best ever. Top shoots across the country have been buzzing about our new HOA product and we look forward to rolling it out over the next months leading up to the National Sporting Clays Tournament in Texas.

” -Jason Vanderbrink, President, Federal Ammunition

In total, there will be 16 12-gauge offerings of 2 3/4-inch shells with more sub-gauge offerings to follow in 2022 as the product line continues to be developed and expanded. At the time of writing, there are 13 different offerings on Federal’s website which include .410 bore, 28-gauge, and 20 gauge in addition to the standard 12-gauge offerings. No pricing or availability information has been made available yet.

Not being a skeet, trap, or sporting clays shooter, I have a stupid question: Are "competition" shotgun shells designed to throw a tighter pattern to put more hits on a thrown clay, or a wider pattern to make it easier to get a hit? Or is all that determined by the barrel length and choke, and these shells are designed to reduce recoil? The "article" (really a regurgitate press release) doesn't say. My only shotgun experience is with bird hunting and LE applications, and I'd like to broaden my horizons.

@retfed your pattern depends on the distance the clays will be shot as skeet is close range they skeet chokes which throw a wide pattern longer range like what we in aus call DTL you want a tighter choke so your pattern doesn't open up as fast as shot patterns continue to expand the longer they're flying

This is the new reality - ammo producers looking for "high end" (high margin/high profit) products to produce - diverting production to these products, and eliminating low end/budget/standard products.
