HOT GAT or FUDD CRAP? Collectable Chinese AK or Communist Garbage?

Welcome everyone to the 85th edition of ‘Hot Gat or Fudd Crap?’, one of our many series here on TFB. If you’re new to the series, this is where we look at the most obscure firearms that are actually for sale and ask the question – is this Gat a sweet deal or only has a Fudd appeal?  Each week the TFB staff weighs in with their thoughts, but readers get the final say in the poll at the bottom of each article.

In our last edition, our poll showed that you, the readers, decided the AR-57 was fudd crap.

    HGFC – Doesn’t matter, It’s a trap — Poll Results

At this time the original auction has ended with the AR-57 going unsold.  While the seller did correct the item by removing the stock, apparently that just wasn’t enough.  We can only hope that this 5.7×28 chambered gat has found a new home.

In this week’s edition of HGFC, we look at a rare Norinco BWK-92 chambered in .223/5.56. As is tradition, this sporter AK variant is currently up for sale on GunBroker for $1,695.00 with No Reserve.

     “It’s no $8mil HK P7 but it’s clean.” -Matt M.

“Post-89 straight cut but pre-AWB thumbhole? Between the bans baloney.  Hard pass.” -Rusty S.

Selling this sporter-ready gat is GunBroker seller southwind6711, located in Heflin AL.  Let’s see what they had to say about this rare Chinese AK.

Up for auction is a beautiful and RARE PREBAN example of a Chinese Norinco BWK-92 Sporter rifle, chambered for the .223/5.56mm rounds. This rifle is as new in the original container with all original parts and matching serial numbers. A few BWK-92 series rifles were imported from China from 1990 until early 1994. Unfortunately, all Chinese rifles were banned from further import in April of that year and, in fact, many stuck in customs at the time were cut up into parts kits. Today, the BWK-92 is a very rare, popular and desirable AK47 variant. Features include 1.6mm heavy duty stamped receiver, 16.25″ medium heavy profile barrel with chrome lined bore, adjustable hooded front sight, adjustable rear sight, blued finish to the external metal parts, polished bolt carrier group, machined double hook trigger group, wood furniture, and front and rear sling swivels. This BWK-92 has a so-called square cut or square back receiver, meaning standard stocks will fit without modification. Also, it accepts all standard AK magazines and drums as it has a milspec double stack magwell with receiver dimples. I bought this rifle new decades ago and just put it up and never fired it at all. The rifle comes in the original container with one original 5 round steel magazine, one additional 10 round magazine, owner’s manual, oiler, cleaning/disassembly kit, adjustment tool and sling (all also never used and in new condition). know the laws in your area and do not bid if these are not legal for you there. Good luck!!!!!

Regardless of how you may feel about the AKM platform, you have to admire the condition this rifle has been kept in.  Pre-ban guns always have their fair share of less than desirable features.  Still, these are issues that couldn’t be fixed by a competent gunsmith.

As even the seller mentioned, this gun could be easily converted and thumbhole stock removed.  Even so, the longer I look at it, the more I’d like it to remain in this configuration.

Today’s market has more than a few tactical AKM pattern rifles.  After seeing far too many of these, I have to admit, the thumbhole stock on this rifle is perfectly executed.  Yes, that’s weird to say, and I’d prefer a standard pattern grip for normal use any day.  The stock and but pad just give it that perfect “matches all your dad’s hunting rifles” look.  It’s both classy and confusing.

So is this rare Norinco BWK-92 worth it for the money or is $1,695 asking too much?  As always I leave it up to you, the reader, to decide.
